Title: North Ormesby 3rd Annual Carnival Cargo Fleet [out of focus].
The film begins in a terraced street where hand painted murals decorate the front windows of many of the houses. Bunting is also seen hanging across the street. A woman stands in the street beside a mural of a clowns face which is attached to a wall.
Against the wall of an end-terraced house on Deacon Street, a large mural of two space capsules in space is painted. Along the bottom is written ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’. General view of an empty terraced street with bunting hanging across the road and around lamp posts.
The film changes to show a colourful fabric costume of The Very Hungry Caterpillar laying on the ground beside a road junction leading onto James Street in North Ormesby, a troupe of girls preparing to put on the costume.
A procession begins along James Street, headed by a brass band marching behind a banner, passing by the Crown and Mitre. Behind them come a number of decorated floats followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar seen previously. A man in black face, dressed as a minstrel, walks beside the caterpillar. Another decorated float comes next, the costumed people on board waving at the crowd lining the route. A Bass & Co steam powered delivery lorry drives past. Behind it comes another float for the ‘Cargo Fleet Sweet Factory’, which passes the Market Tavern with costumed children on board dressed as various confectioneries. The Cleveland Militaries Juvenile Jazz Band march past next behind their banner. More costumed children follow, many holding the hands of their parents. Two men dressed as clowns carry a paper rainbow and wave at the camera.
The film cuts to another street and the procession passing by. A lorry passes with a woman sitting in the back waving at the camera. The Very Hungry Caterpillar passes again followed by a number of adults dressed as babies. Some are pushing prams in which one of the adults sits. The ‘Cargo Fleet Sweet Factory’ followed by the Cleveland Militaries’ pass next. The film ends with various costumed adults and children marching past, many waving at the camera.

A dream of a carnival for the kids
There’s no place like home for the children at this Land of Oz themed carnival in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough. ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ is the theme when the streets of ‘Doggy’, as North Ormesby was affectionately known, put on a festive face for carnival. A brass band heads up the parade from James Street, the locals creating a colorful spectacle of floats and inventive costume, which includes The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the Cargo Fleet Sweet Factory, a Tin Man and the precision-marching Cleveland Militaires juvenile jazz band, striking a chord with drums and kazoos. This amateur film by a Dunkirk veteran, born during the First World War, who lived in North Ormesby all his life, reflects the great community spirit in this working class area, south of the River Tees. It was established in the mid 1800s to accommodate a huge influx of workers after large seams of iron ore were discovered at Eston in the nearby Cleveland Hills, transforming Middlesbrough into the greatest iron producing capital of the world. There are several theories about the district’s nickname, one suggesting it referred to the illegal whippet races once held there, another that it was due to the ‘wet dog’ smell that lingered from the iron works at its boundary. |
