An amateur film by Ken Wright of Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee events taking place around South Shields on the 15th July 1977. The film begins with the arrival of the Royal yacht Britannia into the River Tyne. This is followed by shots of the royal motorcade and Queen Elizabeth II waving at the waiting crowds outside South Shields Town Hall and along John Reid Road. The film then shows a street party taking place in Wharton Street with long tables laid out in the road and the street and terraced houses decked out in bunting and Union Jacks. The film ends with the adults making a toast to the Queen and children dancing in the street.
The film opens with a shot of a poster commemorating the Silver Jubilee 1977. The film cuts to show a programme laid out on a table, the front cover reading "Visit of her Majesty the Queen to South Tyneside in Celebration of her Silver Jubilee Year on Friday 15th July 1977".
From the cliffs at South Shields overlooking the mouth of the river Tyne the Royal yacht Britannia makes its way up river towards Newcastle upon Tyne. A small crowd gather on the beach near to Groyne Pier and lighthouse to watch as the ship sails past.
A Union Jack flies from the roof of South Shields Town Hall, Westoe Road. Bunting and Union Jacks adorn the front of the building as a small crowd waits on the steps for the arrival of the Queen. Along John Reid Road, crowds of children, stand waiting for the arrival of the Her Majesty, some waving small Union Jack flags. Seven children hold up letters that reads ‘Monkton’ referring to Monkton Junior School where the filmmaker was a caretaker. Two men on a pony and trap ride past. Then the royal procession drives past. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip wave at the crowds as they pass.
The film cuts to Wharton Street where local residents stand around a long table laid out down the middle of the road. Bunting hangs across the street and Union Jacks fly from many of the terraced houses.
Young children sit around the table waiting to eat. A large Jubilee cake is laid out on table. General views show residents eating. A toast is made by the adults, nearby a small boy enjoys an ice cream. Following the meal a group of children and young people dance in the street.
The film ends with a shot of various Silver Jubilee souvenir programmes, mugs and paraphernalia laid out on a blue cloth.
Context
A silver lady in South Shields
One big happy family on the streets of South Shields for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee visit.
Queen Elizabeth II sails into Tyneside for a Silver Jubilee visit. The patriotic school kids of Monkton Junior School, South Shields, don their best Union Jack hats and wave their flags as the royal couple drive by in a flash (although a totter’s pony and trap is first on the scene). The trestle tables groan with cake and sandwiches at a street party in full swing on...

The trestle tables groan with cake and sandwiches at a street party in full swing on Wharton Street. There’s some dodgy disco dancing to end the celebrations … and not a punk in sight. Ken Wright, the caretaker of Monkton Junior School and an enthusiastic amateur cameraman, was on hand to record on Super 8 film the anticipation and excitement of local celebrations in this coastal town at the mouth of the Tyne. |
