Title: Croft
Title: In Widescreen
Various general views of Formula 3 racing cars parked beside their services vehicles and men working on the engines. One car has been up-ended on its tyres so that an engineer can look underneath.
At the start line, a race gets underway followed by cars speeding around the track at various locations. From behind wooden fences spectators watch as events unfold. One car spins off, but quickly gets back into the race. As the cars come around a bend, another car spins off.
The film repeats the opening montage showing two people sitting on the roof of their vehicles watching as the racing car speeds past and one of them coming off the track in a cloud of dust. The sequence continues with a marshall helping the driver off the track and others pushing the car off the roadway.
A number of Formula 3 cars drive off the track into a siding. Two young boys sweep a section of track. General views of the site show various sports cars parked up beside their service vehicles. Writing across the side of one vehicle reads: ‘Driver Chris Craft’.
At the start line, spectators watch as another race gets underway, this time with sports as well as Formula 3 cars. Many spectators sit on the roofs of their vehicles as the racing cars speed past.
A grey sports car pulls into the pit lane and a woman holds up a lap card as the other vehicles speed past. Engineers work on the engine of the vehicle as another car pulls into the pits. Back on the track the remaining cars continue to speed around the circuit.
At the finish line, a checkered flag is held in the air as the winning car speeds past.
The film cuts to show an open-top Rolls Royce diving slowly around the circuit. The film ends with two sports cars being towed around the circuit by Land Rover recovery trucks.

The thrill of Formula 3 and the RAC Sports Car Championship captured at Croft race circuit. An exciting day for Formula 3 and sports cars competing at a former World War II airfield, Croft Circuit in Dalton on Tees, south of Darlington. Mechanics fine tune engines before Formula 3 cars power around the track in the Guards International Trophy race. The British competitor Chris Craft drives a white McLaren M8C for the Team Ecurie Evergreen that looks a bit like a Batmobile, but his car takes a spin after 9 laps and drops out of the race. The future Grand Prix winner Carlos Pace takes first place. This film was produced by Middlesbrough-based amateur camerawoman Betty Cook, who was also the President of the Cleveland Cine Club and the North East Cine Society. She filmed many events in the north east region from the 1960s through to the 1980s.The filmmaker, her husband Arthur and their son were devoted fans of motor racing and volunteer marshals for the British Grand Prix. They frequently had good access to the pits, a prime spot for her camera to capture many well-known drivers and championship cars over the years. Spectators at the original Croft had the opportunity to watch some of the famous names in motor racing such as Denny Hulme, James Hunt, Niki Lauda and Damon Hill. |
