More Scottish holiday and excursion filmed by filmmaker Ronald Pringle. This time an exploration of some coastal areas of North and East Scotland.
The film begins with the travellers' brightly coloured Austin Metropolitan on a remote road in the Durness area of Scotland.
General views follow of beaches and waves crashing on the shore in slow motion. A roadside sign reads to 'Smoo Cave'. This cave is located at the eastern edge of the village of Durness, on Scotland's most northerly coastline. A family walk down a path to the cave. Birds nest on rocks nearby, close ups follow of wildflowers and heather follow. Peat is stacked in fields and on roadsides.
General views follow of beaches, sand dunes and a lighthouse. In the distance the distinctive 'tennis ball' outline of Dounreay power station west of Thurso.
The film cuts to John O'Groats with general views of the village. Shots follow of the Berriedale Arms and general store, that may have been filmed at a village named Mey a few miles east of John O’ Groats.
At John O' Groats a signpost points to Orkney and the Shetland Isles, Stroma Isles and Lands End. The one pointing to Rutherglen (the holidaymaker’s home) indicates that it is 310 miles away. Tourists take snaps and visit the 'Last House' souvenir shop.
General views follow of seabirds on cliffs and the distinctive pointed sea stacks east of John O’Groats at Duncansby Head. A long distance view shows Girnigoe Castle on the far North East coast of Scotland just south of John O’Groats. General views follow of cliffs and sea stacks in dull weather. A man explores the castle building.
Further inland away from the Highlands east coast, the location changes to Lairg at the southern end of Loch Shin. Views follow of the dam and reservoir, part of a hydro-electric scheme built in the 1950’s. The travellers come across road resurfacing works on one of the narrow highland roads. General views follow of the Falls of Shin a waterfall and tourist attraction just south of Lairg.
At Urquhart Castle, south of Inverness on Loch Ness a ruined loch side 16th century fortress, a family explore the ruins.
A Bedford van parked next to the loch displays a sign which reads 'Loch Ness Investigation' , presumably an investigation into the elusive monster, thought to exist in the loch.
Views follow of Glen Affric north west of Loch Ness and water skiing on Loch Earn (some in slow motion).
A family trip on a motor boat on Loch Lomond is next, and the film ends with general views of water skiiers then boats at Pittenweem on the coast just south of St Andrews.
