An amateur film made by Maurice Clyde of two flights aboard a light aircraft taking in views across the region both north and south of Newcastle Airport. In the first flight the aircraft flies north along the Northumberland coast from Walkworth to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The second flight flying south takes in Chester-Le-Street and Durham City, then onwards to the coast and Seaham and Sunderland before heading back to Newcastle.
The film begins with views from a light aircraft taking off from Newcastle Airport. The pilot is at the controls with a second man sitting up front. The plane flies over Walkworth Castle and then travels north along the Northumberland coast from Amble towards Craster taking in Dunstanburgh Castle and Bamburgh Castle.
They fly near to Lindisfarne or Holy Island and then along the coast north to Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Royal Border Bridge. A British Rail Intercity 125 train passes through Berwick. The plane lands back at Newcastle Airport.
The film cuts to a second flight beginning with a light aircraft taking off from Newcastle Airport and flying over Newcastle. They fly over the city and St James Park football ground and then along the River Tyne eastward. Industry and housing line both banks of the river.
Turning inland the plane flies over the A1 motorway and a complex of large houses built nearby. They fly by Lumley Castle and the Durham County Cricket Grounds at Chester-Le-Street. At Durham City views of both Durham Cathedral and castle on the bend in the River Wear.
The plane follows the Wear eastwards and over the A19 motorway and a large quarry. Views of Seaham Harbour follow and the Durham coastline with the aircraft turning inland over Seaham itself. Moving north the plane flies over Sunderland with view of the city and docks around the mouth of the river.
The journey continues north back to the River Tyne and then westward along the over over South Shields area back towards Newcastle with views of the various bridges crossing the river. The film ends again with the plane coming into land at Newcastle Airport.
