An amateur film by Derek Mathieson following members of the Darlington Video and Filmmakers on a walk through the countryside around the village of Reeth in Swaledale, North Yorkshire. Title: Derek Mathieson presents Title: 'Stepping Out' with the Darlington Video and Filmmakers The film begins with views of the group leaving Reeth and making their way towards the River Swale. At the river they pass a number of runners who rush into the water and wade across. The group walk through woods, across stiles and along country roads before resting for lunch. Some of the older members rest while others play ball with a small child. The group continue on with their ramble and cross the Reeth Suspension Bridge heading back into Reeth. 
Context
The Darlington Video and Filmmakers group enjoy a day’s hike in the North Yorkshire Dales. This hike with fellow Darlington Video & Filmmakers club members was filmed by Derek Mathieson. He began shooting film at the age of 11 using a clockwork 8mm Kodak Brownie camera. Leaving school aged 15, he worked at the Inverness Empire Theatre, learning the craft of theatre production, including lighting design, and abandoned filmmaking for several years. The Darlington Video and Filmmakers group enjoy a day’s hike in the North Yorkshire Dales.

This hike with fellow Darlington Video & Filmmakers club members was filmed by Derek Mathieson. He began shooting film at the age of 11 using a clockwork 8mm Kodak Brownie camera. Leaving school aged 15, he worked at the Inverness Empire Theatre, learning the craft of theatre production, including lighting design, and abandoned filmmaking for several years. He joined Darlington Cine Club in 1977 after attending a talk at the club by the South Shields animator Sheila Graber. He shot his first amateur documentary on the Lily Laundry in Darlington, built in 1912, where he then worked as an accountant and company secretary. He has since made over 70 documentary and home movies, moving to video production in 1992.
