Title: C.4.A. Among the Woods [titles over APR logo]
Men and women’s lawn bowling matches take place in a park, the seats bordering the greens filled with spectators. A man smoking a cigarette marks his Usher’s scorecard. A man and woman walk past the club house, the woman amiably throwing a ball of paper at his head as he smiles at the camera. They meet and chat with a couple of gentlemen in trilby hats watching the games. A bench full of women knitting share a joke with a couple. A small boy and girl are playing on the sloped lawn down to the bowling greens. More shots of the matches follow, each person with their set of uniquely marked bowls, known as “woods”.

[Colour footage]
Home movie footage of a steam ferry or pleasure boat trip, possibly on Lake Windermere in the Lake District. Travelling shots of the trip from the boat. Title: 7 September 1938
Shot of kitsch ceramic figures of a bride and groom. A young bride poses outside a greenhouse in her wedding dress and lace veil with a large bouquet of red roses. Portrait shot of the bride smiling. Portrait shots of five bridesmaids in pale green satin dresses with puff sleeves, and a younger cute little girl in a white shiny dress.
General view of an urban church with a tall spire. Guests arrive at the church gate for a wedding service in their best formal dress, some of the men in top hats. A large woman dressed in a flouncy blue evening dress hurries in with a bouquet of flowers, accompanied by a young woman in a straw hat and white dress. The bridesmaids arrive carrying huge floral wedding bouquets. The six bridesmaids pose for a group portrait at the church entrance. The bride arrives with her father, who doffs his top hat and smiles at the camera. The bride’s mother carries the long bridal train, following immediately behind her daughter. A corpulent policeman in full uniform poses for the camera, smiling broadly, whilst the young officer with him smokes a cigarette casually.
After the wedding, there’s a group portrait at the church entrance.
In the grounds of a hotel or a large house (?), two bridesmaids peer from a side doorway. A bridesmaid and another guest come outside. A photographer organises formal group portraits in the garden, his large plate camera on a wooden tripod. Casual portraits of the guests and family are taken in the garden. Confetti is tipped into a top hat. As the bride and groom emerge from a doorway, confetti is thrown by the best man and friends. The married couple get into a car (Reg. no. CLJ 614) and drive off. Guests at the reception continue to exit from the side door.
In the next sequence, cars pull into a car park in Grasmere village, the Lake District. Tourists stroll around Grasmere. Exterior shot of F & D Bowers Grasmere Tea Gardens and people wandering past a tourist stall. A ferry pulls up to a jetty on Windermere Lake. Lots of people are queuing on a pier for a lake cruise. A boat comes in to dock. Exterior shot of the Ambleside Pier (Waterhead Pier) boat house, advertising a 21-mile cruise. People are taking their seats on the open deck of the Swan ferry. The pleasure boat sails off on the lake.
