This miscellaneous amateur footage was shot during the week of celebrations for the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in May 1937. The film is part of the Newcastle & District Amateur Cinematographers Association collection.
The first sequences are a snapshot of streets and buildings decorated with bunting, banners and flags for the coronation celebrations in 1937 (locations unidentified). They include general views of the Raven Inn (selling Joule Brewery ale), The Etonian men’s outfitters, various inns and hotels including the Crown Hotel.
The next sequence records busy streets in London just before midday, including a shot of the grand Mappin and Webb building at Bank.
A military review takes place on the Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne, on May 12th 1937, with displays of British Armed Forces, military bands and regiments. A senior officer presents official medals to two soldiers. A parade of regiments includes ex-servicemen in civilian dress. There is a drive-by of military vehicles pulling artillery. A gun salute takes place.
Crowds of people are crowded onto The Mall in London to watch the return procession to Buckingham Palace after the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on May 12th 1937. The coronation coach drives by.
Film footage of neon light displays of crowns and salutary slogans, the facades of buildings such as the Royal Institution of Civil Engineers, and advertising neon in Piccadilly Circus follows.
The final sequence is of a night time procession of lit torches and the lighting of bonfires. Silhouetted by light from the bonfires, groups of men in Scout leader hats watch the bonfires. This is probably footage of the bonfires lit by Tyneside Scouts for Newcastle’s coronation celebrations.
