This amateur film records a Newcastle & District Amateur Cinematographers Association (ACA) boat trip from the Newcastle Motor Boat Club marina on the Ouseburn, down river to Tynemouth for a special launch of the Tynesider lifeboat from Tynemouth’s RNLI Lifeboat Station. The lifeboat trip may have been especially organised for the production of this documentary film.
The film opens with a shot of the Newcastle on Tyne Motor Boat Club gateway, which opens to reveal a small boatyard on the River Ouseburn. Leethams Flour Mill (later The Cluny music venue) stands on the far bank. Some men are gathering up the mooring ropes on two boats, preparing to leave the boat yard. The Ouseburn Viaduct is visible in the background. A man attempts to power up the engine on a second boat, a woman and young girl waiting on deck. The first boat sails down the Ouseburn passing warehouses and mills on its bank. Two men again try to power up the motor of a second boat. The first boat sails to the mouth of the Ouseburn as it flows into the River Tyne. The second boat with the woman and child as passengers leaves a quayside on the Tyne and sails after the first boat.
The Kano Palm, Liverpool, ship is glimpsed on the north bank of the Tyne as the boats pass. A man sails the small boat of Newcastle ACA members from the bridge. Various traveling shots record sights along the Tyne including Spillers Mill; huge Goliath cranes at a Low Walker shipyard; ships under construction in shipyard berths; Howdon Staith (coal staithes probably at Northumberland Dock); and Smiths Docks at North Shields.
Members of Newcastle ACA and the skipper are on the deck and bridge of the boat as it makes its way down river. A traveling shot follows of fishing boats docked along the North Shields Fish Quay. Passengers help moor the boat at a quayside near Tynemouth, and some of the cine club group climb off.
General view of Tynemouth Lifeboat Station and slipway across the river at Tynemouth. Close-up of the skipper of the small boat, which then approaches the lifeboat station.
There’s a brief shot of the lifeboat named ‘Tynesider’. A shot from inside the lifeboat station documents the lifeboat sliding down the slipway into the Tyne. Members of the Newcastle ACA are on board along with some of the crew. Traveling shot from the lifeboat of many sailing boats near Tynemouth, Tynemouth Priory and Castle on the headland in the background, and then the lighthouse, North Pier, at the mouth of the Tyne. Traveling shot from the lifeboat as it sails on the North Sea, North Pier lighthouse now in the background. Next, there’s a portrait shot of the 'Tynesider' lifeboat skipper.
The 'Tynesider' is back at the Tynemouth Lifeboat Station, coming in to dock. Some of the guest passengers leave the boat. The lifeboat is hauled back up the slipway by ropes. A group of bystanders watch its progress.
The Newcastle ACA members return to their own boat and sail back up river. A fishing boat is filmed alongside.
The boat sails back up the industrial Tyne at dusk, passing the many shipyards. A steam tug tows a ship down river, belching out black smoke.

A Newcastle cine club gang head downriver for a winter ride in the new Tynemouth lifeboat, the Tynesider. This amateur film also records the bustling post-war waterfront on the way from an Ouseburn boat yard in Newcastle’s East End to the RNLI station at the Gut, North Shields, sailing past the imposing Spillers Tyne Mill, Wallsend shipyards, Howdon Staith, Smiths Dock and an impressive Shields fishing fleet moored hull to hull at the Quay. This film was produced by the Newcastle and District Amateur Cinematographers Association, one of the earliest British cine clubs, which had its first meeting in 1927 when James Cameron (the club’s first president) gathered together a group of men and women (four of each) interested in making moving pictures. It was one of just five ACAs in Britain at the time, and still survives today. The Tynesider lifeboat operated between 1947 and 1979, so this special event probably took place for the cine club cameras soon after the first launch ceremony. |
