On the speaker’s stage at Durham Racecourse, part of the 1984 Durham Miners Rally Dennis Skinner, MP of Bolsover finishes his speech by paying tribute to union leadership and stating that 1984 will be a turning point in British Labour history and that the miners are on their way to victory which the audience begins to chant.
Following a brief introduction Arthur Scargill gets to his feet and to the chants of ‘We’ll Support Him Evermore’ stands at the podium looking out at the crowd. He talks about the responsibility of the National Coal Board for the 1984 pit strike and calling for his members to respond more readily to his leadership in the future. He also talks about Margaret Thatcher and his experiences of the police during he dispute.
