The second of seven camera rolls filmed by Trade Films of the 1984 Durham Rally of the speech given by Peter Heathfield General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM).
On the speaker’s stage at Durham Racecourse, part of the 1984 Durham Miners Rally recently elected General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM) Peter Heathfield makes a speech in which he is defending the decision not to call a ballot on the strike, anticipating a break-through and saluting both a new generation of miners as well as the women who fight alongside their men. He also makes a call to the BBC to release the footage showing police brutality against striking miners. His speech over everyone applauds with everyone on the stage with the exception Dennis Skinner MP getting to their feet including that of Arthur Scargill, President of the NUM and Neil Kinnock leader of the Labour party.
