A beautiful example of stencil colour, this Pathe Pictorial film shows views around Tynemouth including the statue of Admiral Lord Collingwood and the Longsands, people enjoying the beaches both at Tynemouth and Whitley Bay and swimmers at Table Rocks pool, Whitley Bay.
The film opens with general views of the mouth of the Tyne and Tynemouth harbour with the sea crashing onto the breakwater; looking north from South Shields towards Tynemouth and the Collingwood monument and Tynemouth priory; and Longsands beach and the lighthouse in the distance.
Looking east across the rocky shoreline of the Tyne at low tide with the statue of Collingwood in the middle distance and the Tynemouth Pier Lighthouse in the far distance.
General shots of the Collingwood monument follow, a solo man in a bowler hat reading the plaque before descending the steps. View across the Tyne estuary and a steam fishing trawler on the sea from the cannon on the Collingwood monument. The travelling crane can also be seen on the North Pier.
The sea laps onto the Tynemouth Longsands with St Georges Church in the background. Crowds of people enjoy the beach at Whitley Bay with its fairground rides. There are a number of large beach tents. Children ride a small carousel. A pleasure boat packed with people leaves a small pier that leads out from the beach.
There are general views of St Mary’s Lighthouse and causeway.
Children build sandcastles on the crowded beach and paddle in the sea. A woman points out the camera to her toddler.
Children play in the pool at Table Rocks, Whitley Bay. Around them people sit and watch. Children kick up their legs and splash in the pool for the camera.
