Title - Year of the Alps.
The film opens with a page that contains a picture and some writing. The picture shows mountaineers reaching the summit of mountain and the writing states that it is the 'Year of the Alps'; page is dated 1965. A map then shows the mountainous region.
The film opens with views of a lake in the Alps region and boats (including pedalos) cross the calm waters. The camera is then positioned on a gondola and captures the spectacular views as it travels up into the mountains. Following this, there are panoramic views of the Alps, particularly focusing on one snow covered peak.
The filmmaker then captures a ski lodge style hotel called 'Les Rhodendrons', with people relaxing outside on the patio. This is followed by more shots of the mountain range surmounting the area, before a man shows the intended route of travel, using a stick to outline the route on a large scale map. After this, the camera shows the journey as the filmmaker continues higher into the mountains, once again using the Gondala's as transportation; there are again expansive views of the Alps.
From an observation deck, the peaks of the Alps are easily visible, and there is a shot of a girl looking through an observation scope. A woman in a white winter jacket then poses precariously on a rock for a photo. This sequence shows many panoramic views of Mountain and shots of the tourists, some of whom have mountaineering equipment.
Now off the mountain peak, the filmmaker captures two red trams as they leave a station, and this sequence contains an abundance of views out from the tram window. Off the tram, a busy footpath is briefly shown and tourists eat alfresco with a ski slope in the background.
A map shows the filmmaker has travelled to 'Gundelwald', and in the next shot a Swiss flag outside a hotel confirms that the filmmakers have now travelled into Switzerland. This sequence shows some nice view of mountains and also a shot of a cemetery, before moving on to a chairlift ride up a mountains. Families walk up further into the mountain, wearing t-shirts and dresses, which conform heavily to the 60s trends.
The filmmaker captures another tram entering a station, and on the platform a sign reads 'Kleine Scheidegg Jungfraujoch'. A map then shows the route of the tram as they travel further up the mountains, and there are shots of the landscape from each stop off. Eventually, the filmmaker reaches a ski resort; people wearing jumpers, and other quite unsuitable clothing, ski past the camera, and then a sled pulled by huskies stops to rest.
The action now switches to a town. The filmmaker captures various bustling streets populated with tourist and horse and carts. There is then some traditional Swiss entertainment, which involves men whirling lengths of rope around their heads. A helicopter is then shown preparing to take off in a field, and there is a shot of it airborne as it passes overhead.
Another tram journey follows. The filmmaker then shows a page from a book, which relates the history of the first mountaineers to scale the Matterhorn in 1865. The following sequence opens with various shots of tourist taking photos and filming the Matterhorn. There are then shots of snowy slopes and people sitting amongst the rocks.
From a Swiss town, the filmmaker captures several shots of the Matterhorn Peak, which towers high above, before a sequence that shows a procession through the streets, with a brass band, choir singers and a sermon delivered from an outdoor stage. Groups of people then gather round some stone memorials, and one is inscribed with the words 'his body now rests beneath the Holy table in the English church'. Mountaineers and tourist are then captured milling in the streets and the final shot shows climbers ascending a steep snowy path.
