The film opens with a shot of a church and tilt down to close-up of English rose garden. The commentary guides us through the aesthetic qualities of the rose and historical appreciation which centres on three different types of rose. Close-ups of the three groups of wild, red and white roses follow.
The red rose is depicted as a ‘token of love.’ Close-up shots record a man presenting red roses to a woman [heads not seen]. The woman cradles the roses.
A heraldic sign represents the Wars of the Roses emblems.
Various shots of wild roses and rose hips follow.
Children pick rosehips in the countryside. A group of people pick wild rose hips at a quarry site.
Shots of a rosehip bush.
The scene cuts to a shot of a man in a dark suit seated at a desk in an office
Ships are docked on the River Tyne quayside, with the Tyne Bridge pictured in the foreground. The commentary reports that during World War II supplies of vitamin C were pressing concerns for the nation’s health due to the shortage of citrus fruit.
The scene shifts to shots of research laboratory workers extracting vitamin C from rosehips. A female lab technician uses a spectometer or other scientific equipment to measure sugar content of syrup. This is probably filmed in either the Bristol or Newcastle factory base of Scott and Turner. There is a possibility it is in Newcastle General Hospital.
Various shots follow of children collecting rosehips, queuing up with baskets of rose hips. The rosehips are weighed on scales, and money is counted out as payment (focus on hands).
Three teenagers, a boy and two girls, enter a chemists shop. Shot of a teenage girl picking rosehips from a bush.
A young girl gets into bed, kisses her doll and goes to sleep.
A sign reads: "Rose Hip Receiving Depot. 3d Paid For Every Pound."
A bottle of Delrosa Rose Hip Syrup is taken from a medical cupboard, also containing Andrews Liver Salts.
Two women with hair tied back in white headscarves are weighing sacks of rose hips on a large red weighing machine.
The film cuts to an exterior shot of the Delrosa factory at Coxlodge, Fawdon, on Tyneside. Workers are pushing rose hips into the crusher on a conveyor. A woman supervises a boiling vat of syrup in the pasteurising process. Shot of liquid syrup flowing up a see-through pipe. High angle shot of a man at the controls of the machine that adds sugar. A woman in a white uniform and hat works at one of the machines. Shot of the filter machine.
Then back to the automated production line for the bottling of the syrup in sterilised bottles. Rows of women sit at either side of a conveyor belt, checking that the caps are tightened on the Delrosa bottles. Women workers pack bottles into boxes. A box is placed onto rollers.
Promotional shot of a row of syrup bottles branded with dollar signs.
Ships are docked along the River Tyne on Newcastle Quayside.
The final sequences illustrate how the syrup can be administered for good health. A nurse takes a bottle of Delrosa from a medicine cabinet and administers the syrup to a female patient in a hospital room. A group of young children eat ice cream with syrup. A child eats ice cream topped with rose hip syrup and feeds her doll some. A family eats breakfast round a table, putting dollops of Delrosa onto cereal. A mother feeds rose hip syrup to a baby in a high chair.
An elderly couple read newspapers by the fireplace.
The film advertises the fact that Delrosa is a "dollar earner."
A revolving signpost displays a list of the uses of rose hip syrup for health, including clear skin, coughs and colds, vitality, for young and old.
There is a fade in and out of a display of bottles of Delrosa. The final shot is of a single bottle of Delrosa Rose Hip Syrup.
