Title: Christened by Mrs. R. Peyton Burnett
Shipyard workers coat the slipways with grease. Other workers are seeing to final preparations for the launch. Bosses gather near the propeller. The launch platform is dressed. The bow of the ship appears to loom over the shipyard as the ship sits in the berth. There’s a view underneath the ship as the bulk rests on beams of wood. Some of the workers make their way down a walkway next to the ship, preparations for the big day almost complete. Bosses and workers still mill around beneath the hulk of the ship.
Workers are assembled to watch the launch. Distinguished guests arrive by coach and chauffeur-driven car and make their way to the shipyard. Mrs R. Peyton Burnett is helped up the steps to the launch platform. A target for the champagne bottle is drawn onto the bow of the ship. Mrs Burnett vigorously christens the ship with the bottle. The ship moves off down the slipways. From another angle, the stern of the ship with giant propeller first glides into the water, a big crowd watching from the quaysides. View down the slipways, scaffolding each side of the berth, as the ship launches into the Tyne and turns. A riverscape of cranes and shipyards can be seen through a mist over the river. The elderly Mrs Peyton Burnett watches solemnly with other guests.
The ship is manoeuvred on the river by tug boats.
Back at the launch platform, guests chat and then begin to make their way back down the steps to the yard. Here, they pose for group portraits.
Tugboats move the tanker hull downriver to the fitting out jetty. Two little children are still at the quayside waving off the ship.
