Record by Turners of Newcastle of the launch on 14 May 1976 of the bulk carrier vessel Jadran from the Deptford yard of Sunderland Ship Builders Ltd. on the River Wear, built for shipping company Atlantska Plovidba, Dubrovnik, (then Yugoslavia).
Cranes surround the bulk carrier Jadran at the Deptford yard. Workers are gathering around the ship, and a filmmaker has set up his tripod and camera in preparation for the launch. Some of the crew peer down from the deck of the ship high above the yard.
Representatives for the ship’s sponsor and other guests climb the steps to the launch platform, where the media are also in place. The woman who will launch the vessel, traditionally the sponsor’s wife, holds a bouquet and smiles broadly. Two young children are also there for the launch, the boy clutching a child’s annual book. Photographers prepare their cameras. Guests congregate for a group portrait.
The sponsor’s wife reads her speech and swings the champagne bottle at the bow of the ship to christen it. The ship slowly moves away and guests applaud enthusiastically. The ship slides down the slipway. Guests shake hands as the ship moves majestically into the River Wear.
Shot from further along the bank of the river, the ship moves into the water stern first. Guests are chatting on the launch platform, as the ship slowly turns on the river. The sponsor and wife meet with some of the shipyard workers down on the slipways.
A tug manoeuvres the huge ship on the river.
