A film showing Wakefield city centre and Gala in 1925.
The film begins with shots of Wakefield City Centre. A policeman directs traffic - both horse drawn and motorised vehicles, including trams and trolley buses. Men sit on a bench in the middle of the cobbled street. The film shows the shop fronts, which include Wakefield Rubber, Chaplin and Son Chemists, the Yorkshire Penny Bank, Bradleys, Jessops, the Grand Clothing Hall and Timpsons, before showing the Cathedral and Queen Victoria Statue. A trolley bus has a 'Melbourne Ales' advert on the side.
The film next shows the Wakefield Gala. The streets are lined with crowds watching the procession of clowns playing odd musical instruments, decorated bicycles, children and adults in fancy dress, the scouts, a brass band, decorated vehicles and horses pulling decorated carts. One of the carts carries a large model of Wakefield Cathedral. Again the clown band is shown, with instruments made to look like household objects.
The final portion of the film includes a mock battle in a field with men on horseback wearing full helmets, watched by a crowd. One man on a donkey amuses onlookers by falling off and being chased by the donkey.
