A Tyne Tees Television Newsview magazine report originally broadcast on the 24th September 1964. Reporter Jack Clarke joins five divers from Redcar as they take part in a training dive to explore a local wreck.
The report begins about a mile off the Redcar shoreline at East Scar Rocks where four divers from Redcar (Duncan Forest, Ian Denny, Ken Ralph and Jerry Morne) dive into the water from the boat ‘Middlesbrough’. Today they are investigating the wreck of the “Demetrius” which sank in 1953. They are hoping to plot the positions of all the wrecks off the North East coast to help coastguards and shipping. They haven’t yet found anything valuable but many interesting items, one of the divers comes to the surface with a porthole cover.
From the bow of the boat an interview with the fifth member of the team who is on lookout Eric Pendleton. He says that diving these waters can be dangerous; today the water is very murky but they hope to find treasure eventually. Cannon balls are the most interesting find so far as it is unusual for this part of the coast. Eric says they were fired from the Redcar beach as target practice just before the outbreak of World War One. The report ends with the four men in the water getting back into the ‘Middlesbrough’.
