This interview with Yorkshire cricket captain Brian Close from Tyne Tees Televsion's Newsview programme, took place at Acklam Park, Middlesbrough on the 8th of June 1964. It was the middle day of a three-day county championship match with Yorkshire against Somerset. The match was a draw.
The film opens with Brian Close practicing in the nets as the reporter, believed to be John Pargeter gives a short resumé of the cricketer’s career so far. Behind the nets local children watch him practice including some from nearby Green Lane School.
The reporter asks whether Brian Close, as well as being a chess player, Yorkshire captain and test match player, has any ambitions left. He explains that he will hopefully continue to play test and county cricket to the best of his ability.
Brian defends his admission to the Yorkshire team at the relatively young age of 18. His view is that if the ability is there it should be nurtured.
On screen John Pargeter asks him whether his being chosen at a young age was just good fortune or that Yorkshire were now giving younger players a chance.
Brian’s reply is that it is his belief they look for good players first and foremost, rather than the age of a player.
Again on screen John asks about the criticism Brian has received at test cricket however he excelled against the West Indies. Brian is asked if finds the supporters fickle.
Brian agrees, supporters can be fickle especially those in the North of the country, but he also suspects reporting in the media doesn’t help the situation.
John asks Brian, as only the second professional to have the Yorkshire captaincy, what is his reaction is to this position. He explains he was personally thrilled to accept the role as captain, it being a longstanding personal ambition.
Currently Yorkshire aren’t doing too well in the championship, although the quality of play at recent matches Brian suggests, makes it hard to believe their current position.
John observes that Brian himself is struggling with personal form, and with a wry smile Brian agrees. Brian blames some of it on bad weather earlier in the season, which affected practice sessions. He concedes that the harder he tries to get back on form, the worse it seems to get
John asks Brian if the role of captain is a heavy burden to him. Brian praises the players and says it has been an enjoyable experience, save for the current season where things have not been going Yorkshire’s way.
The film ends with John thanking Brian for the interview and both men expressing the wish for better results in the remainder of the season.
