Credit: Commentary by Tom Kilgour. The film opens with a view of the river Tyne showing three large shipyard cranes on the far bank and a cargo ship moored alongside. There are views of the North Shields Fish Quay looking out to sea as a small green trawler comes alongside a nearby quay. General views looking upstream towards Newcastle and Gateshead: the bridges crossing the river include the Tyne Bridge and the Swing Bridge. The scene changes to show a view of a factory. A steam engine pulls a number of coal wagons past a railway station, probably Newcastle Central Station. Looking upstream from the Tweed estuary, a number of bridges cross the river at Berwick upon Tweed. Five fishermen on the banks of the Tweed are manually winding in a fishing net. There are more picturesque views of the Tweed further inland: rural countryside, small stone cottages, bridges, a number of small fishing boats and traditional nets hanging from wooden posts. In the background can be seen the Union (Chain) Bridge with cyclist crossing from England into Scotland. A map of Northumberland shows the one-tenth of the county to the south around Newcastle as far north as Newbiggin-by-the-Sea that is described by the narrator as being industrialised. A second map shows the county north from Amble that is described by the narrator as being rural. A diesel passenger train passes a stone cottage, the birthplace of George Stephenson followed by his statue in Newcastle. A young boy climbs down from an iron cannon that forms part of the Admiral Lord Collingwood statue that overlooks the Tyne estuary at Tynemouth. A cargo ship heads downstream on the Tyne past a shipyard. General views of rural scenes featuring farms, fields, moorland, rocky outcrops and valleys with picturesque rivers running through them. Heather grows between the cracks in a rocky outcrop and a fishermanr with a pipe in his mouth catches a fish from a river. A car travels along a narrow country road and is seen from the front passenger seat. There are more picturesque views of rivers and streams passing through rural countryside. A whitewashed stone house built in a wooded valley with what narrator describes as the Cheviot Hills in the background. There are more scenes of picturesque valleys and streams around the Cheviots. Yellow flowers and ferns grow in a valley with a steam passing through it. A man walks across a footbridge over the stream with steep rocky hills in the background. The church tower and village of Kirknewton as seen from a field of grazing sheep. Another view of the church from the churchyard takes the film inside and the ancient stone sculpture of the Adoration of the Magi at St Gregory's Church in Kirknewton. There are views of the chancel with its high alter and stained glass window before returning outside and the steeply curving hills know as bells and surrounding countryside. A man and a woman walk down Church Street next to St Mary’s church in Wooler. A car passes a row of small shops along Market Place and turns into Church Street. A tractor harvests wheat in a field. There are more picturesque scenes around the Valley of the Harthope Burn in the Cheviots and Hedgehope Hill which is shown first in the summer and then in the winter with people skiing. The film moves to the river Breamish as it meanders through the Northumberland National Park and the narrow Cheviot valleys with hilly landscape leading to the Scottish Border. There are more picturesque scenes around the river Coquet showing the river flowing over small rocky waterfalls. A view of a small stone cottage at Alwinton. Two small children wal by another large stone house in the village. A white car is parked in a road at Harbottle surrounded by a number picturesque flower fronted stone houses. General views of theruins of Harbottle Castle and the chapel and ancient well at Holystone. A stone cross stands in the middle of the water with a stone carving on its edge. Seen from a hillside, is the village of Rothbury with the church at its centre. There are various views of the village including its stone bridge and village green. A man fishes the Coquet. A woman with two small children crossing a stream using stepping stones. General views of the valley of the Grassleaf Burn with its tributary leading into the Coquet and the bracken and heather of the Simonside Hills. From on top of a hill, the film shows the cone-ring markings cut into the sandstone by early man. Two male walkers march through the bracken over the moors that look down into the valley below. The film moves on to show the mote hills earth works near the village of Elsdon and the square shaped village green and traditional Northumbrian pele tower that stands on a hill behind the village church. A white VW Beetle (Reg: SJR 690) turns right at a junction and passes a stone house. A man stands beside a road sign that points the direction to Cambo and Morpeth in one direction, Rothbury in another and Newcastle in another. The Beetle crosses over a stone bridge and follows a road up hill. The car, now on top of the hill, comes to a stop near to a National Park signpost. The driver gets out of the car and looks up at Winters Gibbet. A red van travels along another road that the narrator advises will join the Otterburn Road. Two cars are parked alongside a lake. Conifer trees grow along the banks and sheep graze in the meadows. A man walks across a wooden footbridge over a small river. Views of the roman ruins of a ballista station are followed by Redesdale that, the narrator states, was at the centre of the infamous Middle Marches. Redesdale is represented with views of a picturesque river and a stone house built next to a road. There is a painting showing a woman carrying a plate to a table of men. Various views around the ruins of Evestones Village. Looking down into the valley the river Reed flows towards the river Tyne at Redesmouth. A red Morris Minor Post Office van travels downs a narrow country lane at Falstone in the Tyne Valley. There are various views of the river and surrounding pastoral lands. A man walks past a row of terraced cottages at Bedlingon before showing the gates in front of a large manor house. The house is shown again from a distance followed by a village seen from a road looking down into a valley. Trees and other fauna surround the rock face of the Gorge of the Hareshaw Burn near Bellingham followed by a stream flowing over Hareshaw Linn. A number of different groups of walkers and tourists walk on or around Hadrian’s Wall. There are general  views of the wall from different vantage points and views of various well-maintained Roman forts, milestones, temples, monuments and gateways. At a local agricultural show, a crowd of people stand around talking, many of the men are leaning against shepherd’s staffs. A man examines a number of sheep in a livestock competition surrounded by various farmers who are holding onto their animals. Two men wrestle in a field. A man jumps over a raised bar. General views of young men are sitting on a log hitting each other over the head with pillows. Views of a series of betting stands. Large local crowds are watching all these events. A man and his sheep dog take part in a trial. A Scottish bagpipe marching band entertains the crowds of onlookers. Three men on horseback lead a pack of hounds on a hunt down a country lane and into a field. Two young men climb a steep rock face using only a rope. One of the young men slips as he is climbing but manages to climb to the top to join his companion. A number of small boats sail across Greenlee Lough while more boats are under canvas on the shoreline. There are various views of people sailing on the lake followed by views of sailing boats on the estuary at Alnmouth. A man helps a young boy into a sailing boat followed by another sailing ship passing by on the estuary. Looking up from the river Coquet is Warkworth Castle followed by the stone bridge leading into the village. A woman walks along a path in the village as a bus travels in the opposite direction. There are various views of Bamburgh Castle from a distance starting with the beach, road and finally from Bamburgh itself. Views of the battlements directly under the castle are followed by a view of the grave of Grace Darling and the lighthouse on the Farne Islands as seen from the mainland. From the beach are the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle followed by Lindisfarne Castle on the hill as seen from the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island. Tourists walk through the ruins of the priory. A view of St Cuthbert’s Chapel. Four people run through sand dunes and start playing with a red ball on the beach. At Beadnell, the film shows the limekilns. Two fishermen use their oars to row their small fishing boat under a bridge. Other fishermen unload a catch of fish from three small boats onto the quayside. Another small fishing boat moves slowing through the harbour at Seahouses. Here, a small trawler stands against the seawall followed by another boat seen coming into harbour. At Craster, a number of small boats have been moved onto the shoreline near the road. A view looking out to sea from the beach. A river flows into the sea and swans swim near a reed bed. On a large sandy beach a woman is paddling in the sea with a small child. The bay can be seen to extend some distance. The film ends with the sea breaking over rocks on a beach. Title: The end.
