An iron shunt pushes out the smoking coke from the oven onto the coke bench. A worker supervises beside the bench. Gulleys are formed in sand beds, through which the white-hot metal flows either direct into the ladles to be conveyed to the steel furnaces for almost immediate conversion into steel, or Iron. Title: It is diverted into side sand channels leading to the “Pig Beds.” The main sand passage here is known as the “Sow” and its tributaries “Pigs”, hence the name “Pig Iron.” Title: Forming the Pig Beds Two men work to form the pig beds, an area of sand below the furnace, or a type of mould in which pig iron is cast, moving wooden patterns (slats) from one long ladder-like bed to another, whilst a foundry sand slinger throws sand into beds, which will create the mould shape once the pattern runners are removed. After the furnace is empty its banks may have become worn through the action of the Bath, as the heating process in the furnace is called, and so they are “fettled”, i.e. made up by basic burnt Dolomite Stone, which is thrown on the walls and fluxes with the heat in the furnace, forming a hard mass A team of four men in long aprons hurriedly shovel up burnt dolomite stone and throw it on the furnace walls. Title: The ladle when full contains 70 tons of molten steel and is then conveyed by overhead crane to a line of moulds into which it is emptied. Glimpses of the sometimes sunrise tinged, sometimes purple-shadowed Eston and Cleveland Hills are hard to miss from the gridiron streets of Middlesbrough, squinting east towards the origin of its Iron Town future.

Although primitive iron working had existed in the area for centuries, it was John Vaughan and his mining geologist colleague, John Marley’s discovery in 1850 of a rich ironstone seam in the Eston Hills, close to the Tees, that launched Cleveland’s ‘rusty gold’ rush. On August 13th 1850 Vaughan and his business partner, Henry Bolckow (a German-born entrepreneur and financier considered the ‘founder of Teesside’), started mining at ‘Bold Venture’, their first trial quarry at Eston.  Furnaces were quickly erected at a rolling mill and foundry on Vulcan Street in Middlesbrough.

By 1866, open fields were consumed by mines, quarries, factories, and a panorama of fifty-eight blast furnaces in Middlesbrough, Cargo Fleet, South Bank and Port Clarence, billowing fire and fume, clustered along the Tees. ‘Iron works were being built almost as quickly as the ink was drying on the agreements.’ Middlesbrough transformed from backwater to boom town swiftly and earned the nickname ‘Ironopolis’.  By the end of the 19th century Middlesbrough thrived as the greatest iron producing capital of the world, many of the names of its pioneer ironmasters immortalised in the town’s street names still.

 From Raw Materials to Finished Product was commissioned by Dorman, Long & Company, one of the giants of steel making on Teesside, founded in 1875 as ‘steel makers, constructional engineers and bridge builders’. Monty Python comedian Michael Palin was a fan. In the early 20th century the company absorbed Teesside steel pioneers such as the Bell Brothers and Bolckow and Vaughan, becoming the largest steel producer on Teesside with a staggering workforce of 20,000 by 1914, when the firm opportunistically became a profitable manufacturer of artillery shells for the war effort.

In this period Dorman Long also began construction of a £4.5 million plant at Redcar, which opened in 1917 and covered 150 acres of riverside land. The huge blast furnace, as tall as St Paul’s Cathedral, would dominate the mouth of the Tees over the years, registering the fluctuations of economic fortunes that have dictated the lives of steel workers and local Teesside communities into the 21st century, until its demise under SSI in 2015. Between 1866 – 1888 an estimated 5 million tons of slag from the furnaces built the reclaimed land nearby known as South Gare.

The Middlesbrough-born photographer Ian Macdonald, a former ICI worker, documented the Redcar works between 1983 and 2000, describing the blast furnace as a ‘living thing’, the front line of iron and steel manufacturing respected by the men who worked it with bravado and humour. From Raw Material records the choreography of these workers in white silk mufflers and flat caps feeding the furnace beast in searing heat, or conducting rivers of white hot metal. The orchestra of processes in the steel works captured by the camera take on a mysterious, alchemical beauty for the viewer.

The company went on to construct many of the most famous bridges of the first half of the last century, including the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle, London’s Lambeth Bridge and Middlesbrough’s Newport Bridge. Like a giant clunky, green Meccano kit, all nuts and bolts and moveable parts, it was the first vertical lift bridge in England, and the largest in the world at the time, raised to a height of 120ft almost every day in the 1940s and 50s for river traffic on its way upstream to the once busy port of Stockton.

From Raw Materials (1932) was released in the year the Sydney Harbour Bridge, one of Dorman Long’s prestige construction projects, was completed and officially opened. The design was developed in parallel with the New Tyne Bridge in Newcastle-Gateshead, but derived from New York’s Hell Gate Bridge of 1916.   The commemorative film is also preserved at North East Film Archive Construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  Raw Materials capitalises on this international engineering success with a promotional film of the company’s extensive operations on Teesside that documents the dirt and graft that helped build the modern world.

This ‘process’ film illustrates every stage of Dorman Long’s integrated iron and steel business, from coal and iron ore mining (raw materials) to the drama of steel making, its consumable products awaiting despatch by rail – barbed wire and steel girders for power stations, skyscrapers, factories and bridges. Although the film was produced in 1932, it is derived from the simplest of early non-fiction formats, albeit with intertitles (like pre-cinema slide lectures) and vignette effects.  The film historian Tom Gunning has said of this format: ‘Industry itself is on display … giving birth to the modernity’. This industrial transformation, here the successive stages of steel making from the ground up, ‘enacts a basic narrative of industrial capitalism.’ Contra Grierson, who coined the term ‘documentary’, Gunning sees in ‘process’ films not a forerunner of the documentary but a genre that retains the primitive impetus of the ‘actuality’ in privileging the ‘view’ aesthetic, or here chronological views, despite creative reshaping through editing.

 In richly detailed monochrome, Raw Material opens with a panorama of the Dorman Long works in the 1930s, blotting out the sun with smoke. A tracking shot reveals the heavily industrial bank of the river. Imagine this scene in colour, ICI’s seemingly boundless chemical works brothering the steel works and shipyards, perhaps beneath a brooding Teesside sky, or perhaps at night, bright lights, flashes of flame from burn-off, metallic stacks, a stream of white heat and glowing red, yellow, orange, magically flowing beside the blackened Tees. This architecture of awe, exhilaration, even terror, burned into the imagination of a teenage Tees-Sider called Ridley Scott, future globally acclaimed film director. Later, the retro futuristic landscapes of his cult dystopian sci-fi thriller, Blade Runner (1982), based on American author Philip K. Dick’s philosophical 60s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, are haunted by his experience of the industrial Teesside sublime.

“There's a walk from Redcar into Hartlepool ... I'd cross a bridge at night, and walk above the steel works. So that's probably where the opening of Blade Runner comes from. It always seemed to be rather gloomy and raining, and I'd just think "God, this is beautiful." You can find beauty in everything, and so I think I found the beauty in that darkness.” Ridley Scott
