Children also enjoy a Punch and Judy Show. WACAR comprises Wright Anderson & Company Limited, Clarke Chapman, Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Company Limited and Redheugh Iron & Steel Company sports clubs.
Smartly dressed families walk along a gravel path, arriving for the WACAR Associated Sports Clubs Seventh Annual Inter-Company Sports day, some men wearing suits with ties and cloth caps, and the women in belted coats.
A woman in a grey overcoat hands out programme leaflets to members of the public. A close-up shows a spread of leaflets outlining the day’s events for the Wacar Associated Sports Clubs: Seventh Annual Inter Company Sports at Eslington Park, Gateshead, on Saturday 19 June, starting at 1:30pm. Further events are listed: “The Band of the Fifth Cadet Battalion – The Durham Light Infantry will be in Attendance'. Coins drop onto the leaflets.
A blue, red, white and yellow WACAR flag flutters on a flagpole in a breeze.
Young uniformed cadets of the Durham Light Infantry stand in line on the sports field.
A girls’ sprint race takes place and officials speak to the winners after the finish. An elderly dignitary dressed in a tweed suit makes a speech before inspecting the cadets. Committee members and distinguished guests then exchange pleasantries, shaking hands and greeting one another on the sports field.
A boy’s sprint race takes place. Officials mark results on their cards. A girls’ race is followed by the men’s sprint. A portly umpire in a white coat and flat cap fires a starter gun for the women's egg and spoon race. A men’s bowls match is in progress.
A Punch and Judy show is taking place. Many children are gathered for the Punch and Judy show: giggling and enjoying the performance. Shots of the audience of children follow. A group of adults stand beneath a tree on the side-lines, also watching the show.
Women make for the finish line in a walking race. Competitor 177 is patted on the back and congratulated. A men’s sprint race takes place. Shots of a cycling race are intercut with progress in a long or mid-distance men’s race.
Various shots of the audience follow, some waving to camera.
Another men’s cycling race is in progress. Two men play a hard court singles tennis match.
The Band of the Fifth Cadet Battalion, Durham Light Infantry, marches around the athletics track playing brass instruments.
There are close-ups of competitors in the men’s long jump, filmed from the end of the sandpit. Footage is cut together with another mid-distance race, close-ups of the competitors as they pass. An injured runner is treated as he sprawls on the grass. The winners of the mid-distance race reach the finish line.
A men’s bowls match continues on the Eslington Park green.

A sporting chance for workers
Families from the heavy metal world of Gateshead’s great engineering firms bond at the annual sports day in Eslington Park. The generations of families from Gateshead’s great engineering firms are in high spirits as they bowl, race and cycle their way to the finish line at an annual workers’ sports day at Eslington Park in the optimistic (and very fit) 1950s. An audience of children giggle through a Punch and Judy show and the marching band of Durham Light Infantry cadets entertain the crowds with drums and kazoos. This inter-works event was organised for employees of the three great engineering firms in Gateshead, Wright Anderson, Armstrong Whitworth, Clarke Chapman and Redheugh Iron & Steel (WACAR). The companies generated a vibrant amateur sporting culture on Tyneside in the 1950s and 60s. |
