Cars parked in the car park at Huntcliff School, inside pupils on a summer school in the History and Literacy group sit in small groups around tables as teachers place large sheets of paper onto their desks. A teacher explains to the groups what they are to do, another wonder around carrying an object which the pupils have been asked to identify. Other objects are show to the pupils and they are asked to give ideas of what it was originally use for. Around one table a group of five children are given a metal churn which they look over with one girl smelling the inside with a look of disgust.
In another classrooms a series of folders left out on tables, at the front of the class pupils from the Science and Technology group sit around a projector screen while a teacher conducts a lecture on the chemical industry of Teesside. Now sitting around tables, the teacher who gave the lecture now speaks with one of the groups, a second teacher joins the conversation as a girl in the group asks questions. At another table a third teacher punches holes in some paperwork as bags of plastic clips are handed out. Back at the first table the pupils discuss an ICI foil helium balloon, one of them holding two large test tubes.
At nearby Liverton Mines a teacher leads group from the History and Literacy Group around the village. On clipboard they look at historic images of buildings in the village and begin to sketch one of the houses across the street which has steps leading to the front door.
Pupils from the Science and Technology group go for a walk to the top of a hill made up of slag from the old ironworks changes to a second History and Literacy Group posing for a photograph at the foot of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge. They are giving a tour inside the bridge’s wheelhouse before ascending the bridge stairs to the walkway at the top where several take photographs of the surrounding area. The bridges gondola passes underneath after which the pupils begin to descend back to the ground. At the base some of the children talk about the experience.
The Evening Gazette newspaper offices on Borough Road with traffic passing. Inside a group from the History and Literacy group are given a tour of the archive and learn how a modern newspaper is put together. In the Print Room they watch the latest edition come off the press before been given a tour of the building. At the Evening Gazette Education Centre pupils sit at desk listen to a member of the papers staff speaks to them.
At the Tees Barrage International Water Sports Centre, a group from the Science and Technology group work on their teambuilding skills. While most of the group sit in canoes on the water, two climb across the others. The exercise over the children paddle out onto the water using their hands as paddles. An instructor watches over a girl as she tips her canoe over.
At Nature’s World a guide gives those in the Science and Technology group an explanation as how the ponds their work as part of the Botanics Centre Recycling plant. Split into smaller groups they explore the nearby scaled down version of the river Tees writing notes onto clipboard from information boards beside sections of the stream. Inside Loftus Library at the Community Information shelves members of a History and Literacy Group sit along a table making notes on the local community. A woman helps a girl look through books on a shelf changes to the group sitting listening to an old woman talk about her life in the village.
Standing along the edge of the river Tees members of one of the Science and Technology group smell different soil samples in a test tubes they have collected from different parts of the river. On the moors near High Force waterfall in Teesdale, one of the group is given instruction in using a field microscope.
Back at Nature’s World another Science and Technology group are given an informal introduction by a bridge engineer. They then split into smaller groups to produce their own bridge with the materials provided. The bridges completed one of them is tested by being placed between two chairs on a small stage. Weights are added by their instructor that exceeds the design weight of 2kgs. More weights are added until it eventually collapses, everyone in the room laughing and clapping.
Back at Huntciff School folders are unloaded from the back of a car while inside the school hall display stands are erected and presentation material set up both on the boards as well as on tables set up beside them. Nearby girls in 19th century costumes rehearse a dance routine.
To parents and guests sitting in a hall the schools head teacher explains the aims and objectives of the summer school before several children from the different groups come up on stage to receive a certificate. On stage the children begin to re-enact scenes from local history. Parents and visitor wonder around the school hall looking at the displays that were put up previously with some of them speaking with the children involved about what they have learned.
