Title: On The Channel Steamer The film begins with shots of men and women boarding a Channel steamer ship to Boulogne. Kate Brown walks towards the camera on deck. Tom Brown boards the ship with a rucksack and suitcase. Title: The Cameraman Tom Brown smiles to camera and mouths a “hello.” Title: We’re Off Steam puffs from the ship funnel as the journey begins. Title: Paris Title: Paris, The Opera General view of the Paris Opera, or Palais Garnier. Title: Paris, The Madeleine Church A general view of the Madeleine Church follows. Title: Paris, The Place de la Concorde The film records light traffic on the Place de la Concorde, a major square with fountains and statues. Title: A Paris Policeman A traffic policeman swings a white baton as he stands on a busy Rue de Rivoli. Title: Rue de Rivoli A sequence of shots records pedestrians and traffic on a stretch of the busy commercial street, Rue de Rivoli. In shots of the shaded, colonnaded passages, possibly located along the north wing of the Musée du Louvre, pedestrians walk towards the camera. Title: The Eiffel Tower General view towards the base arch and pillars of the Eiffel Tower taken from the centre of the esplanade. Panning shot to the top of the tower, which is silhouetted against the sky. A view of the base of the Eiffel tower from another angle shows the detail of the ironwork and frames the Trocadero Palace in the background. Title: The Trocadero Palace The Trocadero Palace framed through the base pillars of the Eiffel Tower. Panning up to frame the two western towers against the sky. Panning left from the south to show the flying buttress arched exterior supports, around the choir and nave. Title: Les Oubliettes Next, we see the wooden framed top floors of des Oubliettes, a former prison. Panning shot down to street level where Kate Brown walks by the building. She writes a postcard in front at the entrance to the dungeons, with postcard souvenirs displayed to the right. Title: The Pont St Michel Kate walks across the St Michel bridge, turns, and speaks a few words to camera to rear. Two policemen are following closely behind her and glance back at the camera. Title: Montmartre, Church of the Sacred Heart Panning shot of the façade, the domes and towers of the Basilica of the Sacré Coeur in Montmartre. A wide view of the stairs leading to the front entrance follows. Kate Brown looks towards camera and walks up the stairs. Title: Montmartre, ‘The Singing Artist.’ The next shot of a row of dilapidated, old two storey houses with decorative murals in Montmartre provide a contrast to the grand Sacre Coeur church in the same area. Intertitles introduce shots of the monument to Guy de Maupassant, and monuments to the musician Ambroise Thomas, and composers Chopin and Charles Gounod. Title: In The Parc Monceau People relax in the public gardens of the Parc Monceau. Title: The Luxembourg gardens More people are beside the large fountain in the Luxembourg Gardens, with the Luxembourg Palace in the background. Title: A Trip To The Paris Zoo The next sequences of film, with intertitles, show various views of the animal enclosures at the Paris zoo. There is a general view of the elephantine tortoises, a high viewpoint of the bear pit, various shots of a man and a child feeding an elephant; a giraffe moves around its enclosure and there is a shot of a young giraffe with bowed legs; a close-up of a hippopotamus with jaws open. Title: The Paris Mosque General view of the Paris Mosque. Kate Brown walks towards the Mosque entrance. Shots of the Mosque exterior document the roof, domed towers and minaret. Title: A Gallo Roman Arena Built In 200 A.D. The film cuts to a view of the Arènes de Lutèce, a public park and former Roman arena. Panning shot around the sunken arena and amphitheatre of the site. Kate stands next to the amphitheatre’s caged doorways, which were animal cages that opened onto the arena. Intertitles introduce the film sequences that follow, which are taken in the surrounding area of Paris and feature various exterior views of the royal castle and courtyards of Fontainebleau. In Fontainebleau town centre, a horse-pulled double cart vehicle, loaded high with sacks and driven by several young soldiers, turns into a road in front of the Hotel de Londres. The soldiers smile at the camera as they pass close by. There is a brief shot of silhouetted roofs against a hand tinted dark pink sky. There are then exterior views of the artist Millet’s studio in Barbizon; the Petit Thanon, a small chateau in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles; the Queen’s Hamlet, a rustic retreat built for Marie Antoinette, in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles; and various views of the formal gardens and fountains of the Palace of Versailles. Title: Paris, Avenue Foch Back in Paris, there is a shot of cars driving down the Avenue Foch. Title: Place de la Madeleine People wait at bus stops in the Place de la Madeleine. A bus filled with passengers pulls away and drives past the Madeleine Church, its huge imposing columns in the background. Title: Homeward Bound Ttravelling shots from the Paris to Boulogne train follow. Title: Joining The Boat Passengers board the ship at Boulogne. Luggage is loaded onto the ship. Title: We’re Off Smoke puffs from the ship's funnel. There is a view of the white cliffs of Dover, England, as a train of fuel tankers passes by. Title: Albion An Albion motor car is lifted by crane onto the docks. Title: Chez Nous In the final brief sequence Kate Brown stands outside the family home and reads her diary of the trip.
