A man leads a brass band across the Tyne Bridge from Gateshead towards Newcastle as onlookers watch from the pavement. The Lord Mayor Newcastle Mrs Doris Starkey shakes hands with the Mayor of Gateshead and his wife while television cameras and photographers find the best places to capture the scene. Doris Starkey shakes the Mayor of Gateshead’s head once again and presents him with a jubilee certificate, on the pavement nearby the brass band continues to perform. Doris and the Mayor of Gateshead each hold up their certificates for the camera followed by white balloons being released from the bridge.
A horse drawn Vaux delivery wagon slowly makes its way across the Tyne Bridge, behind it a horse drawn Ringtons delivery cart. Doris Starkey waves at the vehicles as they pass, a woman in the passenger’s seat of a vintage car waves at the camera. A procession of vintage lorries and cars drive slowly across the bridge towards Newcastle.
Alister Harrison speaks with five men all of whom had worked in some capacity on the design or building of the Tyne Bridge between 1925 and 1928. They talk about their jobs and today’s celebrations.
