Title: TTTV Presents
The Royal Maundy Service from Durham Cathedral
In the Presence of Her Majesty the Queen
Under the Direction of The Lord High Almoner (The Right Reverend Michael Gresford Jones)
A montage of Durham Cathedral and River Wear with pedestrians crossing the Kingsgate Bridge.
On Palace Green a crowd watches as Queen Elizabeth II takes part in a procession alongside members of both the Church of England and Royal household from Durham Castle into Durham Cathedral via the Great North Door. Lining the route into the cathedral soldiers from the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) standing to attention.
A photographic montage giving a history of the Maundy service, it’s Royal connections and association with Saint Augustine.
Inside the cathedral the congregation stands as the procession which also includes The Queen’s Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard makes its way slowly along the Nave and into the Quire accompanied by music provided by The Choir of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal and Durham Cathedral. As the Queen makes her way to a seat in the Sanctuary next to the High Altar the Yeoman Guard layout the Maundy purses on a table just below the Sanctuary.
Cannon C.K. Pattinson begins the services by leading the congregation in pray after which the choir sing Psalm 91. The first reading is given by The Lord Lieutenant for the County of Durham Sir James Duff after which the Queen comes forward and begins the distribution of the first of the Maundy purses to 41 women and 40 men seated in both the Nave and Quire. Distribution completed she returns to her seat in the Sanctuary.
A second reading this time given by The Dean of Durham, The Very Reverend J.H.S. Wild. Standing in the entranceway of the Quire a boy, the son of a soldier, holding a bouquet. The Queen comes forward again for the second distribution this time accompanied by two children including the boy seen previous. She hands out two rather than one purses to their recipients
With the Queen returning to the Sanctuary Cannon C.K. Pattinson once again leads the congregation in a pray of thanksgiving after which the hymn ‘Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven’ is sung followed by the National Anthem ‘God Save the Queen.’ The service draws to a close with a blessing being given by The Bishop of Durham, The Right Reverend Ian Ramsey. Coming down to the High Altar the service and programme comes to an end with both the Queen and procession making their way out of the cathedral.
