A number of traditional rural events are shown including clay pigeon shooting, a gymkhana and children’s fancy dress competition on horseback. A steam powered fairground organ also performs at the fair. Credit: Cinelaw Productions Present The film is introduced with a still of a programme for the Teesdale Country Fair in the park attached to Lartington Hall. A page is turned to show the layout of the fair. Children take a ride on a carousel. Balloons are on sale. As visitors wander around in the sunshine, children ride up on ponies on their way to take part in the gymkhana. Children and their relatives are enjoying the mechanical music and operation of a steam powered fairground organ at the fair. A child competes in the gymkhana event. In another competition, some male competitors take part in a Sheaf toss event, using a pitchfork to hurl a burlap bag stuffed with straw over a high horizontal bar above his head. This is intercut with a close-up of a pen full of sheep. A commentary gives a little history of the park and the fair. Children are trotting around a course marked by cones in another gymkhana event. Adult riders in red coats observe nearby, as the event continues with a version of musical chairs on horseback. People queue at a pale turquoise and white ice cream van. Some visitors are taking a shot at the Zetland Hunt shooting gallery, others have a go at clay pigeon shooting. Next, children in fancy dress parade on horses and ponies. A white horse sports a sign that reads ‘The Banbury Cross’; another has a blanket embroidered with the words ‘Argentina’, a map and ‘Aly’s Tartan Army’ plus various badges, its child rider in a tartan outfit. Ponies and traps are driven around an arena in another competition. Show jumping competitors take part in an event, as young children enjoy a ride with adults. Competition footage is intercut with shots of children enjoying a turn on the carousel, sheep munching on hay in their pen, spectators watching the show jumping, a competitor firing his gun at the clay pigeon shoot, and straw bale tossers in action.
