An edition of the About Britain series produced by Tyne Tees Television and transmitted 4th July 1976 that  follows members of a number of men from Jarrow as they grow their prize leeks from an allotment at Monkton Village near Hebburn. Some of the men speak to camera about why they grow prize leeks, some take it very seriously others a bit of fun. Leek growing is a male preserve and seen as away to get away from the wife. They also talk about the best way to grow leeks both in the allotments...
An edition of the About Britain series produced by Tyne Tees Television and transmitted 4th July 1976 that  follows members of a number of men from Jarrow as they grow their prize leeks from an allotment at Monkton Village near Hebburn. Some of the men speak to camera about why they grow prize leeks, some take it very seriously others a bit of fun. Leek growing is a male preserve and seen as away to get away from the wife. They also talk about the best way to grow leeks both in the allotments as well as the local public house, The Lord Nelson, over a few pints of beer. They are filmed at work talking leeks over lunch as well as working to load coal into colliers at the Jarrow Staithes.
