This is a film from the Michael Hobson collection of a trip to Algeria in the late 1930s, featuring an event including French officers.
The film begins looking over docks from high up, with a railway station in the foreground and many large boats moored up. It then shows other areas of the city, possibly Algiers. There is a large fountain and a canopy of trees forming a long tunnel. They tour the city, including a market, packed with people.
The film switches to film a journey along a road following a narrow valley, filmed from the front of a moving vehicle. The valley has steep mountain sides, and the road is very winding, passing underneath several metal bridges, one of them being crossed by a steam train.
Moving into more open territory, they pass local people with camels and some villages. They stop and show a view which includes a large brick viaduct. Two men in western clothes walk with three men in native dress, followed by a marching boy’s band. There are other people, both western and indigenous. There is a parade of local horsemen, a car and there are French officers. Some people sit over an open fire on which an animal is being cooked. The cooked animal is then carried away and served a table with seated westerners.
Some of the local people, buildings and landscape are shown. Large groups of locals gather in what might be a market place. The perimeter walls of a large town are shown, surrounded by a barren landscape. Some local people pose for the camera. Some more of the mountainous terrain and the coast is shown and the film comes to an end.
