This is a film from the Michael Hobson collection of children from the Salem Sunday School in Leeds. The film features their annual camping holiday to the Lake District.
Title – Salem Camp Coniston 1954. We present a flashback of another happy camp. Coniston Hall and the camp site.
The film begins showing Coniston Hall with the mountains behind. Next to it is the camp site.
Intertitle – Sunday. A short hike to Yewdale Tarn.

The scouts march off to the Tarn. One boy gives another a piggy-back while paddling in water, with the others larking about.
Intertitle – Monday. ‘A’ party make a more strenuous excursion.
A group of boys are bending down and drinking from a stream.
Intertitle – A very brief glimpse of them on top of Lancashire Fells.
The group walk across the top of a fell.
Intertitle – A stream is always an attraction.
The boys stand on rocks at the edge of a stream, one of them striking some comical poses.
Intertitle – Tuesday. Let us stay in the camp and snoop around. Alan does a spot of work.
One of the boys is mending a puncture on a bicycle, while two other boys look on.
Intertitle – This is Visitors’ Day.
Several adults sit on the bank of a river, or lake. Back at the camp a couple of adults pose for the camera.
Intertitle – Dinner is served.
The scouts are sitting at long tables in a marquee where they eat dinner.
Intertitle – Camp sports are now traditional. They include sack race, high jump, and obstacle race. Let’s watch.
Each of these activities is featured in order.
Intertitle – Mrs Holmes presents the prizes.
A young woman hands out the prizes.
Intertitle – Wednesday. With every promise of a glorious day, ‘B’ party leaves for the Duddon Valley.
A group of boys with their backpacks are all ready to depart. They set off across the campsite with two adult leaders.
Intertitle – Arriving at Seathwaite in the scorching sun.
The boys race into the village.
Intertitle – A welcome cooler.
They paddle about in a stream and then lay on a patch of grass.
Intertitle – The departure. To Walna Scar and Coniston.
A group of boys and two leaders leave for their walk.
Intertitle – The end of a perfect hike.
The group arrive back at the camp site.
Intertitle – Thursday. In indifferent weather, we visit the quaint village of Hawkshead.
A group of boys and adult leaders mingle around near some shops and parked cars, and walk around the village.
Intertitle – No Coniston camp would be complete if Tarn Hows wasn’t visited.
The scout group walk around the small lake at the Tarn.
Intertitle – Saturday. Camp is over and the tents are struck.
The boys pull out the pegs on the guide ropes on their tents.
Intertitle – In the pouring rain, marquees are dismantled and equipment packed.
A marquee is shown being pulled down and the film comes to an end.
