Made by Geoffrey Willey, this is a film which features Mayday celebrations at the Ryedale Folk Museum as well a scenic views of the countryside in Swaledale.
Large crowds are gathered at the Ryedale Folk Museum. The footage shows the May Day celebrations from May 1st, 1971, when the manor house from Harome was being built. The crucks of the building had been raised a couple of weeks before.
Children are dancing around the maypole. Shots from above of the maypole suggest that Geoffrey is sat on top of the crucks of the manor house. Panning shots show the crowds watching the maypole.
A view down towards the entrance of the museum shows Stand End building on the left and some sheds and agricultural machinery on the right. A view of the opposite side shows the glass furnace building further up the site. A shot shows the bare frame of the manor house viewed from the other side of the maypole.
More footage shows the crowds, maypole, and manor house cruck frames. Close up of some large carts lined up outside the manor house. Exterior shot of the Stang End building. This is followed by footage of the quoit match, showing the men throwing the metal disks at the clay pit.
Shot of the entrance area, showing people coming and going. Rope making activity. Exhibition of metal artefacts on display boards – possibly a display from Rawsons of Kirkbymoorside showing their wrought iron work.
People are watching wood working crafts (Brian Wain is documented as carving oak at this event). Also a stone mason (possibly Frank Wetherill). View up from near the entrance, shows the manor house crucks, sheds on the left and Stang End on the right.
A man is climbing up a maypole to adjust ribbons. There are more scenes of the museum crowds and maypole dancing. View of the fence that runs along from the glass furnace, Geoffrey is filming from the other side of the fence (where Bert Franks garden was). View from outside of the museum. The doorway is on the far left of the barn building.
A man is stood on a shed roof, possibly Geoffrey. Cuts to Daphne setting out a picnic on the roof, getting baskets and things out of the boot. Views of Geoffrey’s Ponteland garden.
Next are scenes of Swaledale. There is a view across to a hill, stone walls and buildings in the foreground. Shots of a river. Looking across the dale to a village, possibly Low Row.
More views of the dale, including snow-capped hills. Daphne takes a photo of Geoffrey filming. More village views.
Cuts to Ralphs cross. A signpost for Hutton-le-Hole, as well as Farndale and Kirkbymoorside.
Footage from a car driving into Hutton, past the village signpost and into the village. They pull in at the museum. There are then scenes inside the museum, machinery on the walk-up site. The film ends with footage of men trying out the pit saw.
