TITLE: A Rhineland Holiday Rhineland Reel Recollections. TITLE: En route for Dover; making the most out of our last English newspaper. Close-up of filmmaker’s wife reading a newspaper. TITLE: A Ostende There is a shot of a boat’s deck. The camera pans around showing lifeboats and people walking around. TITLE: Next morning – Cologne, and the Kölnerhof Hotel for breakfast. Shot of traffic in the city centre. TITLE: and on by coach to Linz-on-Rhine and our hotel – the Europaischerhof. Shot of hotel exterior with people stood outside. The camera tilts up to show the hotel’s name. TITLE: Like most Continental hotels meals are served out of doors in fine weather. Shots compliment above intertitle. TITLE: Linz is an interesting quaint and old fashioned town with many narrow streets and picturesque timbered buildings, mostly painted in attractive style and colours. Shots in town square: the camera pans up old buildings, people walk around and cyclists pass the camera. TITLE: A noticeable feature of many buildings is the clever treatment of the tiling of roofs, where all corners are rounded. Shot complements the intertitle. TITLE: 80 to 100 years ago buildings with stone and brick and stucco facing came into fashion and owners of timbered buildings, wishing to follow the fashion, covered their old buildings with stucco. Recently realising the greater beauty of the old timbered style many modern owners have removed the stucco and painted the old buildings, thus restoring to the town its old world charm. Shots of people walking in the square and the old buildings that surround them. A series of buildings are shown that have Nazi flags outside. TITLE: Nazi Germany compels all youths of all classes to spend six months at a labour camp. Linz has a school where selected youths are trained to be labour camp instructors. The emblem of the Labour Camp Organisation is a spade. The sentry at the Labour School carries a spade, like a rifle. Shot compliments the intertitle. TITLE: The youths each carry a spade at the slope when marching to and from their work. Shots of labour camp band and youths marching through the streets with spades over their shoulders. TITLE: On All Souls Eve lanterns – permanent and temporary – are lighted in the churchyard and make a pretty and effective sight on the Rhineland hillsides. Panning shot of gravestones. TITLE: Priests and friars appear to be plentiful. This friar is waiting for the ferry. A friar stands talking with his suitcase. TITLE: A great many of the girls wear the picturesque local dress. TITLE: Our hotel seen from the Kripp ferry in mid-stream. Women in Germanic dresses pose with their bikes. TITLE: Opposite Linz is Kripp. The Kripp ferry works day and night and is operated by the force of the river current only. TITLE: Our hotel seen from the Kripp ferry in mid-stream. People jostle around and move towards the boat over a bridge. TITLE: Ronaldseck. Beyond, the island of Nonenwerth, with its convent school. In the distance the Drakenfels. TITLE: “Charlie”, a German café proprietor at Rhondorf , directs Mrs Pickard in English to the Drakenfels. An old lady speaks to a man in the street. TITLE: At the summit of the Drakenfels is a “castle”, with the inevitable café, and from here we get a fine view of the valley below. In a café at the top of the mountain, people sit and eat. The camera moves to show the huge drop below the café. TITLE: The next day we do the famous Seven Hills Tour by coach, and our first halt is at the Hotel Margaret Henkreuz. The hotel exterior is shown. TITLE: And the next for afternoon tea – at a fine, big hotel on a hill, the Petersberg Hotel, from which is a splendid view. There is a shot of people eating at tables. The camera then pans across the mountains. TITLE: An important town on the Rhine is Coblenz, where is an enormous statue of the Emperor William I. There is a shot of the statue plinth and then the camera pans up the statue body. TITLE: Cyclists and hikers in holiday dress are plentiful here. Youths are shown in traditional clothes. TITLE: From the monument we get views of the river and the town of Coblenz, with a floating café quite near.    There is a floating café boat. TITLE: Our smiling and attentive hostess and guide, Mrs Stockhausen. There is a shot of a woman talking (Mrs Stockhausen?). TITLE: On to Kochem, on the Moselle river – a tributary of the Rhine, and with a castle. Brief shot of a street. TITLE: To reach the castle we climb a very steep street, and a narrow lane bordered by vines. In this district are miles of vineyards from which the famous wines are made. Shots of narrow streets. TITLE: Mrs. Stockhausen shows us over the castle, from which we get fine views of the beautiful Moselle Valley. There are shots of people walking around the castle, which is partially covered in ivy. Then there are wide shots of buildings and the town below the castle. TITLE: We descend to the little town of Kochem and the Hotel Noss for lunch. Scenic shots of the mountain’s surroundings and further shots of the castle. TITLE: Let’s look at this quaint place. A shot of the town through an old stone archway. TITLE: It’s thirsty weather at Kochem. A child drinks form a water fountain. TITLE: End of part 1. TITLE: Part 2 Title: Now to Bechem, and a view from Bechem Castle to Kochem Castle. There is a panning shot buildings below the castle. TITLE: See the terraces of vines up the hillside. The camera tilts up the hill to show the vines growing from top to bottom on the hillside. TITLE: Altenahr, where we stop for tea and see the children leaving school, and a slow moving bullock wagon. There are shots of children and a bull pulling a cart. TITLE: A typical German chimney-sweep. And another bullock wagon.  A chimney sweep carries ladders and a brush. A bull pulls a cart full of items. A shot of an old town square. TITLE: BONN A famous university city and the birthplace of Beethoven. Shots of people and market stalls in the square. TITLE: The entrance to Beethoven’s house. People walk in and out of a building. TITLE: An unpretentious entrance to the university. A shot taken from under an arch shows a statue on the university campus. Women (students?) stand outside the university. TITLE: German telephone kiosks are of metal framework and obscure glass. Shot of a German telephone box on the street. TITLE: A uniformed (brown shirt) newspaper seller. A Nazi brown short tries to sell papers to people. TITLE: Lotteries, under government control, are quite common, and lottery tickets are sold by men in special uniforms at cafés, on the Rhine steamers and in the street. Here are two different types seen in Bonn. A man in lottery uniform looks at the camera. A lottery man is surrounded by a crowd in the street. TITLE: A somewhat swagger ice cream stall. An ice cream stall in the shape of a car is shown. TITLE: We leave Bonn in the Steamer Graf Zeppelin on the return trip to Linz. The boat arrives and people board it. TITLE: Mrs. Stockhausen and the coach driver (and owner) entertain us on the journey with German songs. A close up of people on a bus (Stockhausen and driver?) TITLE: Germany – like many countries on the continent – has long and special tracks for cyclists. There is a shot from a car of cyclists beside it on the road. TITLE: Scenes in the village of Neuwied. A man tends to some cows and children play music in the street. TITLE: The next call is at Laacher Lake, with its beautiful surroundings and fine, large hotel – and tea on the terrace. Couples have tea and walk in gardens. TITLE: A road sign prohibiting cars and cycles from entering the approach to a nearby Benedictine Monastery. There is a shot of the road sign. The camera then tilts onto a shot of a building (the monastery?) TITLE: We are not allowed to enter the monastery and only see round the cloisters. There is a shot of the cloisters. TITLE: On returning to Linz in the evening we and our coach cross the Rhine in the Kripp ferry. The coach drives onto the boat. TITLE: In Germany you go to the bad to get good. A bad is a spar, and there are many bads in the Rhine country. Here is Bad Ems – famous also for its tennis tournaments. People walk along a path next to the river. TITLE: The Kurhaus, and an unusual police notice saying “make no noise”. There is a shot of the sign. TITLE: More flowers. This time all along the side of the bridge at Bad Ems. The flowers on the bridge are now shown. TITLE: A sign announcing tennis courts. There is a shot of the sign now. TITLE: Another sign – pointing the way to a beautiful view. The sign and views are then shown. TITLE: Back to the coach and on to Wiesbaden. People climb aboard a bus. TITLE: Mrs Stockhausen in the coach explaining the scenery, etc, on the journey. There are shots of scenery from a moving vehicle. TITLE: A passing glance, through the back window of the coach, the Labour Camp girls on a route march. There is a shot of children marching from the rear of a travelling bus.  TITLE: Passing cornfields, where the large stocks of corn have inverted sheaves on top to throw off the rain. The corn sheaves are now shown. TITLE: Wiesbaden. There are shots of a hotel exterior and people and traffic in the street. TITLE: Flowers again; this time outside a bank. The flowers are now shown. TITLE: The Kurhaus Hotel, Kurhaus Gardens and Kurhaus Café. There are shots from a vehicle of an pillared building. TITLE: A short run from Wiesbaden is Henkell’s famous champagne factory, and our party pose for the many snapshotters, A large group photo is taken. TITLE: Inside the bottling department (underexposed, owing to the weak light) Production-line employees work. TITLE: We proceed to Rüdesheim on the Rhine and board the steamer for Coblenz. There are shots of boats on the river. One of them is flying a Nazi flag. A shot of the riverside from the boat. TITLE: A full day’s steamer trip for two marks (about 2/-), Linz to Boppard and back. People are sat at tables on the boat deck. TITLE: A party of Hitler Boys are on board with their leader, and they tuck into their own provisions. Nazi kids eat at tables on the boat. TITLE: Large and powerful tugs, with their trains of big barges, are constantly passing. When going upstream the barges are a long way apart. The barges are now shown. TITLE: Note the different types of barges – all of them smart and clean and with good accommodation for their crews. Various barges are shown. TITLE: When traveling down the river the barges are usually in pairs and close to the tug. There are shots of barges. TITLE: How fishing is done on the Rhine. The fishing boats are anchored, and their nets are suspended from poles placed in the water at right angles to the boat. People relax at tables on the boat. There are shots in the boat’s kitchen. Then there are close-ups of passengers on the vessel. TITLE: Passing Coblenz again, with its landmark, the Emperor Wilhelm I monument. The monument is then shown. TITLE: End of Part 2. TITLE: Part 3. TITLE: Another little river trip this time to Konigswater (sic). Hitler girls on an outing. Nazi children sit on the boat. More people come aboard the boat. TITLE: Here is Königswinter, with the Drackenfels in the distance – and flowers on the hotel fronts. Buildings are decorated with flowers and mountains are in the background. TITLE: One of the many carriages which take visitors to the top of the Drackenfels. There is a shot of the horse-drawn carriage. TITLE: The famous and tempting German Kooken displayed in a confectioner’s window. Cakes and sweets are shown in a shop window. There is a shot of a boat from the bankside. TITLE: A method of fishing common on the continent. From a small boat, men drop down a large square net and the bring it up again and into the boat. TITLE: Tea at a riverside café at Honnef. An old lady (perhaps the filmmaker’s wife?) drinks tea. TITLE: After 12 days at Linz we proceed to Cologne for 3 days. The Hauptbahnof, or main railway station. A shot of the train exterior with the camera panning around. TITLE: Our hotel, the Kölnerhof, opposite the station, with its pleasant terrace, where all meals are served in fine weather. There are shots of people sat at tables in the café. TITLE: The Dom Plaatz, or Cathedral Square, where is a lovely outdoor café. Brief nondescript street shots. TITLE: Another coach trip; this time to Castle Burg, with its gilt statue of the founder who commenced to build it in 1120. It was completed in 1225. There are shots of the castle. TITLE: Even in early times there was the clever and neat tiling of roofs. There is a close-up of a roof. TITLE: A roadside sign advertising Pilsener. The sign is displayed. TITLE: From Germany, across Belgium and on to Ostend. The south end from the Kursaal. A wide-angle shot of a beach. TITLE: The North end. People walk along a path near the sea. TITLE: The North front, with our hotel – the tallest building – and an old disused lighthouse, as seen from the bathing beach. There is a row of houses and an old lighthouse. Horses pull beach huts. TITLE: An extremely popular mode of locomotion in high favour with the visitors. People lie down and ride in a bicycle-like contraption. TITLE: Ostend is also an important fishing port, with a large and busy harbour. There is a shot of lots of boats in a harbour. TITLE: Crayfish, pawns and shrimps are caught in abundance near Ostend. People look around harbour stalls. TITLE: The crayfish, etc., are boiled in vats on the boats before being landed. There is a shot of the vats on the boats. There are shots of old people eating and sorting the catch. TITLE: This is how they dry the fish. The fish are hanged-up. TITLE: On a coach trip to Flanders battlefields. Remains of a large flour mill on the Yser Canal at the Dixmude, used as German headquarters during the war. A monument to Belgian soldiers is in the background. An old woman (the filmmaker’s wife?) walks around the structure. TITLE: “Essex Farm” Cemetery (British). There is a shot of countless white First World War graves. TITLE: One headstone marks the grave of an English boy of 15. The gravestone is shown. TITLE: The famous Cloth Hall of Ypres, battered to bits in the war, now rebuilt. The structure is now shown. TITLE: And the cathedral, restored to its former glory from a heap of ruins. There is a shot of the restored building now. TITLE: A typical Belgian bobby. The male officer wears a white helmet. TITLE: The Menin Gate; a fine archway, bearing the names of many thousands of British soldiers whose bodies were never found. There is now a shot of the memorial. TITLE: Leaving Ostend for Dover.
