This is a film showing of parts of the York Mystery Plays of 1966. It includes footage of events at the Museum Gardens, Castle Museum, and waggon plays. The film begins showing a historical character, possibly a king, on horseback in the Museum Gardens. A crowd of spectators watch as a proclamation is read out. Wagons are being set up for the Mystery Plays in the city centre. A large crowd has gathered at one of the waggons to watch a performance. At the Castle Museum women come down the steps in Georgian historic costume. They are followed and escorted by men also dressed in historic costume. Some of them are enacting a scene, and then the couples dance near the steps. Others in similar costume walk through the city centre. There are also sword dancers accompanied by an accordion player. Elsewhere dancers perform country dancing. Some of the characters from the Mystery Plays can be seen, possibly the person playing God, and other biblical characters. The actors perform in a cemetery and on the main stage in the Museum Gardens, including scenes from the New Testament: the Massacre of the Innocents, the Temptation, Jesus before Pontius Pilate, Golgotha and the resurrection.
