This is one of many films made by amateur filmmaker John (Jack) E Dyson of Leeds. This shows the Swillington Miners Welfare Gala and Sports Day, and also a trip to Scotland.
The film begins with a view over a river. There is a bridge in the distance and factories on one side. This is followed by film of Temple Newsam and its grounds. Next, one of the family members is at home in the garden.
The next section was taken at Swillington Miners Welfare Gala and Sports Day on Whit Monday. Announcements are made, and there is a children’s fancy dress. Then there is a cycle race around a track in a field. This is followed by a women’s running race, a men’s middle distance race, and a women’s sprint race. In between the races, there are children on boat swings, a football match, some horses being led around and other amusements. There is a poster for the event, at the sports ground, Wakefield Road, Swillington, with the date June 11th (if this is Whit Monday, this would make it 1962).
The next portion features Edinburgh Zoo where there are many animals filmed. This is followed by the family camping, with two boys down by a river. There are some people playing a large game of draughts in and outdoor park. Then, in Oman, cars are being hoisted onto a ferry, and there is a sign for “Ladysmith Street, Sraid bean a’ Ghoba.” There is a small fishing harbour with fishermen at their fishing vessels unloading their catches (marked with the initials "INS", for Inverness), and a large warehouse for “Caledonian Fisheries.” The family go out on a rowing boat, and then the boys are on a stony shore with their mother. There is a camp fire and a bridge over a fast flowing river. (The notes that came with the film make reference to Ullapool and Deeside.)
