This is a film showing the Ripon celebrations for the Silver Jubilee of the Queen in June 1977. It shows events in the Market Place, a carnival, street parties and a theatrical performance.
The film begins the Jubilee celebrations taking place in Ripon Market Place. Children are lined up with cycles decorated in red, white, and blue. The Lord Mayor, carrying a clipboard, inspects the children. In the background is a row of red telephone kiosks. The camera focuses on a Princess Diana lookalike in the watching crowd. There is then a parade with vintage cars, a highland band and cycles. The parade ends in a field, along with the Ripon Queen. There is a helicopter display and a display of model airplanes is put on by the Ripon Model Flying Club. This is followed by a motorcycle display team and a game involving knocking over skittles kicking a football. The Highland band parades around the field, and there is a performance of girls dancing. This is followed by the vintage cars and motorcycles circling the field. There is also a fair with a carousel and other rides and fairground games.
Back in Ripon Market Place various competitions are taking place between three youth teams, one for the ‘Interact’ Youth Club, another in green and black stripes and a third in yellow and green squares. Among the games they play is one where they have to assemble a pole as they move around the square. A second game involves filling up a container of water racing with pales of water with holes in. The winners appear to be ‘Interact’, who collect their winning medals. The Ripon Queen sits on a pedestal with her entourage.
Street parties are taking place, including Lickley Street, with a banner declaring “God Save the Queen” strung between the terraced houses, Ambrose Road, which has a large crown, decorated semi-detached houses on Gallows Hill. A group of teenagers are gathered near the Rustic Bridge near the river, with children collecting items in a wood and marking them on sheets of paper.
Back again in Ripon Market Place, children are dressed as chess figures on a board, and are handed souvenirs by a man dressed in a black costume. The film switches indoors where there is a collection of royal memorabilia and an exhibition of paintings and photography. Back on Gallows Hill there is a street party, with children eating party food and seated on a long table. The Lord Mayor is in attendance. This is followed by a theatre performance (faded in parts) of historical events, possibly of Henry VIII.
