Title – A peep at the soldiers of the Queen, in London
Crowds of people mill around the gates to Buckingham Palace. A parade of guards in red tunics and bearskin hats marches past, followed by guards on horseback with plumes of horsehair on their helmets.
Title – Away to the continent
The ocean is seen from a moving ferry, with another ship in the distance. A French flag flies from a rooftop. A straw hat embroidered with the name of the Belgian city Ostende is shown, followed by a hand holding out several banknotes. In the town, a tram goes past behind a pleasant square with flowerbeds and statues. The spires of the neo-Gothic Church of St Peter and St Paul can be seen along with the carved stone decorations of the façade. A horse-drawn cart drives past in front.
Title – In the Park Leopold
In a park, people stroll along paths between grassy lawns. Small motorboats go out on a lake, where swans swim about. People throw breadcrumbs to the swans that waddle about the park.
Title – A place in the sun
Mrs Hall exits a shop with a beach ball, which she hands to Eric Hall, the filmmaker, who waits outside. On a beach, holidaymakers sunbathe and play games, while Mrs Hall and her teenage son sit on deckchairs. Later, she bounces the ball with him and other people can be seen playing in the surf.
Title – Pedal cars – Relic of the German occupation
People drive several small pedal-powered cars along a street. A café has tables with parasols outside on the pavement and another tram is seen going past. Boats are moored in a harbour and a man sits on the prow of one, while others sail out to sea. Fishermen bring their catch ashore. In the harbours, women make nets and fish are strung from wooden frames.
Title – Alive alive’o
A man pushes a wooden cart filled with live, wriggling eels up a busy street. He holds one up for the camera.
Title – Bruges – Venice of the North
The narrow streets of Bruges are shown, with small bridges over the canals. A covered wagon pulled by a horse can be seen on one street. People row boats along a canal and a cathedral is seen from a distance.
Title – Market day in Ostende
At an outdoor market, all manner of produce, including fresh fruit and flowers, fabrics and copper jugs, is sold from stalls under coloured parasols. A young man, probably the filmmaker’s son, performs a small magic trick, holding out a coin between his fingers and making it disappear.
The film ends with a Belgian flag flying in the breeze.
