Title – Cambridge – The incomparable city
Title – …City of infinite variety…
Title – …of old world streets and buildings…
A car drives along a street, past a pub with a sign for Wells and Winch Ales. On a different street stands a half-timbered house with a church in the background. The roads are quiet, with the odd pedestrian and cyclist going past. The historic buildings lean slightly and spires are seen over the rooftops. The view across a river is followed by a woman walking her dog near the water.
Title – …of bridges and boats…
Two men head along the river on a punt. A rowing boat goes under a simple wooden bridge and others are seen being moored near a pub called The Anchor. A group of young people clamber onto a boat and ducks swim past.
A small boat follows a swan towards a white stone bridge. Several more people are punting on the river and groups sit and relax on the banks. A large, grand building with manicured lawns, possibly Trinity College, is seen from across the river.
Title – …of bicycles, and books, and beards…
Rows of bicycles are chained up in the street and outside various buildings. Hordes of cyclists pedal down a road, outnumbering the cars. G. David’s bookshop has a stall in the street and two men, one with a substantial beard, peruse the books.
A sign in a shop window reads “Old School Colours” and the display is filled with various crests, coats of arms and shirt collars.
Title – …of colleges, courts, and churches of indescribable beauty…
A doorway in the Great Court of Trinity College is decorated with stone carvings and the Latin motto ‘Pugna pro patria’, above which is a statue of King Edward III. In another courtyard a woman goes past with a young man in an academic gown. Further colleges and historical buildings are seen, including the squat, round Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
Groups of men in academic robes gather on the pavement and pedestrians go about their business. Students walk through various courtyards and a swan swims on a pond covered with lily pads.
A half-timbered building with supporting columns, possibly at Queen’s College, is shown, followed by a building with cloisters, ivy on the walls and beautiful lawns. A further grand building with four corner towers is seen from outside. Daffodils are in bloom and people come and go through a stone gateway with ornate carving.
Title – The city’s crowning glory – King’s College Chapel
In colour, a chapel and its spires are seen from across a lawn. People relax in the sunny grounds and sit on benches by a wall. Details of stone carvings can be seen, followed by people strolling around. Punts go past on the river and the church building is visible near the banks.
