The film begins with views over the Himalayan peaks. Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay are walking along a mountain path, after their conquest, followed by a group of local men and boys.
Mountaineers are trekking over the snow and ice high up, and doing a reconstruction of rescuing a climber who has tumbled down a ravine.
Meanwhile, back home a homely mountaineer’s wife comforts herself by taking a hot cup of cocoa to bed, with images of people out in a snow blizzard. She speaks to the camera, “A mountaineer needs something to look forward to, and what better than a cup of cocoa.”
“You need a cup of Rowntree’s cocoa"

This is one of several cinema ads for Rowntree’s cocoa produced in 1955, all on the theme of returning from the cold or from dangerous occupations to be soothed by a hot cup of cocoa. It’s one advert from a large collection of films made by Rowntree’s of York (now Nestlé), most of which are adverts for their confectionery products. Before the emergence of television advertising in 1955, the cinema remained an important outlet for adverts. Wallace Productions specialised in making promotional and advertising films from the 1930s through to the 1970s. The use of Edmund Hillary may invoke the memory of Scott of the Antarctic who left behind two unopened cans of cocoa after his death on his ill-fated expedition to the Antarctic in 1912. Scott was unable to use the cocoa because they had run out of the fuel needed to melt the snow to mix with it. Apparently, it still tasted in excellent condition.
