Travel guides to Rome and Italy lie on a paisley scarf, following which the location of Rome is shown on a map. The coat of arms of Rome, emblazoned with the initials SPQR, is seen. In the city, the same initials adorn the top of a tall white tower with a wolf statue atop it. A map of Europe and the Mediterranean carved into a wall shows the geographical area of the Roman Empire. Statues of Julius Caesar are shown from various angles.
A large white column has detailed reliefs carved around it, presumably illustrating a particular legend or history. Traffic passes by a large, free-standing stone gateway with three arches.
Mrs Hall, the filmmaker’s wife, strolls around the remains of the Julius Caesar forum, which contains a variety of walls, columns, collapsed colonnades and other stonework. A sign on one vast building reads ‘Tempio di Romolo’. Mrs Hall and a younger man ascend steps to its tall bronze doors, which have pillars either side. Various marble statues of human figures are seen in front of a ruin with imposing columns around the front. Three ribbed columns are still standing, with part of a plinth still joining them across the top.
At the end of a main road is the coliseum, a vast Roman amphitheatre. Inside, tourists inspect the ruins from around the arena. A horse-drawn buggy drives past outside. Elsewhere in the city, a wide flight of steps reaches up to a grand building with statues of men and horses at the front. A statue of a she-wolf suckling the infant Romulus and Remus sits atop a plinth.
The rotunda of the Pantheon is seen from across a bridge. Traffic moves along a wide road with white columns down either side, towards the gold and white dome of St Peter’s Basilica. In the centre of the vast St Peter’s Square is a fountain and a column with a cross at the top. The rooftops of the city are seen, presumably from the dome, with a view down into the square.
Members of the Pontifical Swiss Guard in orange and black striped uniforms with black cloth hats and swords stand by their sentry box next to a stone gate. Two monks in simple brown robes pass along the street.
A vast white building, probably the monument to Vittorio Emmanuele II, the first king of a unified Italy, has several tiers and plinths with statues to the front. On top of the building are statues of female winged figures riding chariots.
The film ends with another view from the dome of St Peter’s.
