The film opens with a map illustration of Brittany, focusing particularly on the coastal region between Brest and Quimper. Mrs Hall, the filmmaker’s wife, sits on a bridge over a river, where children play on the railings.
A large gothic cathedral, possibly at Quimper, is seen, followed by a beach and rows of whitewashed thatched cottages. A woman leads three small children by the hand down a steep, narrow street. Women wash clothes in the river and a man leads a horse pulling a large tanker down a road.
Title – Sabots and silks, velvet and lace
An elderly woman in a black dress, white cap and clogs strides up a country lane, pausing to blow her nose on a large handkerchief. Another woman leads a horse pulling a large cart piled high with straw. Other women are seen wearing traditional Breton dresses and lace bonnets.
Title – Breton costumes and traditional music at Vannes…
Local women wear a variety of Breton costumes, including a group who have on tall, conical lace hates, white aprons and yellow dresses with embroidered sleeves. Others wear red silk and white lace.
A band marches past, led by a man with a large blue and yellow Breton flag. People watch the parade, which includes various types of traditional dress, from windows.
A group of women carry a model ship between two of them, and others have bunches of pink and purple flowers. Further young women wear black velvet and white lace, while groups of young men and boys play the bagpipes. Several young women pose for the camera in their lace gloves and bonnets, while another two show off embroidered red stockings.
A church is seen behind a neat ornamental garden, where a woman and young man look into a pond. The procession continues through the town.
