The film opens with a map of Europe, followed by a diagram of the mountain ranges around Bolzano in South Tirol, an autonomous province between northern Italy and Austria. A framed picture of a lakeside scene with wooden chalets and mountains is also shown.
Two middle-aged women and a man look out from the balcony of a chalet towards snow-capped mountains. In a town, the buildings have wooden shutters and a ‘Konditorei’ or patisserie has walls painted with various murals. Another building has similar decorations which depict men in lederhosen with rifles over their shoulders and two coats of arms, one of which is the red eagle of South Tirol. The next building shows two men reaching to shake hands, one carrying a red and the other a blue flag.
By the side of a road, a path leads to a small chapel. A mountain range stretches along the far side of the valley, and two women take in the view from a hill road. Various insects and butterflies are seen close-up landing on leaves and flower heads. A man rows a small boat along the river.
In another small town, children play in the street and people sit outside cafes under parasols. A building is decorated with detailed painting designed to resemble picture frames and guilt cornices.
A waterfall tumbles down a rock face, and a swimming pool full of people is seen from overhead, with the blue water sparkling in the sunshine. Sunbathers stretch out on the lawn nearby and outside the Hotel Sonnenhof, visitors sit under brightly coloured parasols.
In a city, possibly Bolzano, a large decorative column with a white religious figure on top stands in the middle of a wide street.
The craggy mountain range is seen again from the valley. Passengers climb into a simple chairlift which carries them up the mountain. People explore the rocky shoreline of a small lake surrounded by evergreen trees.
Mrs Hall, the filmmaker’s wife, walks through a meadow with a large stone building and picks wildflowers. On top of a nearby hill is a large stone statue of an eagle.
The film ends with a glimpse of the Château de Chillon near Montreux in Switzerland, different views of the mountains and ripe fruit hanging from the bough of a tree.
