A stone fortress sits atop a rugged hillside, probably near Zaragoza, and inside one wall is decorated with a small, simple religious painting. A plaque reads “A Cesar Augusto que dio a esta ciudad nombre eterno”, or “To Caesar Augustus, who gave this eternal city its name”. A statue of Caesar with one arm raised stands between two vast stone pillars, nearby which are the ruins of various round towers and arches. A map of Spain is followed by a map of the Castile region, and an arrow indicates a location near the town of Tudela. Chambers are set back into a rock face of light-coloured stone, and two boys stand on a large wicker cart and use pitchforks to unload hay into one of these. Another of these stores has a pile of logs outside. In open countryside, a shepherd tends his flock. Inside a small workshop, a man and woman sit at small wooden benches making the jute soles of traditional espadrille shoes. In a town, a young woman makes wicker baskets and examples of her work are shown. A hand holds out a small glass lizard, followed by a brown glass vase. By a furnace, glass blowers work on decorative pieces, with the glass glowing red hot in the relative darkness. A potter sits at his wheel, throwing small simple cups. The finished pottery work has a blue glaze. In other workshops, a woman hammers metal reliefs, probably brass or copper, and craftsmen make leather bags. Two horse-drawn carts drive down a tree-lined road, where the bottom halves of the tree trunks are painted white. Outside a farmhouse a farrier shoes a donkey. On the map of Spain, a red arrow points to Zaragoza. The buildings of the town include a light stone monument with a cross and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar, which has four corner towers and several decorative domes. A priest in black hat and white collar walks past outside. Mrs Hall, the filmmaker’s wife, stands on the nearby square and lets pigeons land on her hands and shoulder. A bright gold icon of the Madonna and child is shown against a black background. The mountain of Montserrat, near Barcelona, is indicated on the map. A cable car ascends above a valley and up the mountainside.  The Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria perches on the side of the mountain, with a large courtyard to the front. Nuns in black habits walk around the buildings. A row of stone arches with marble statues between them offers an impressive view out from the abbey. The abbey buildings have stained glass windows, carved decorative figures, columns and painted murals. A black and gold figure of the Madonna is shown against purple velvet. A cardinal in rich magenta vestments stands talking to a group of men and crowds of people wait by a stone archway. A black car has a red and yellow flag on its bonnet. Another Catholic dignitary in black and red robes gets out of the car and greets he cardinal, while several men take photographs. The film ends with a rosary on a purple velvet background and another view of a stone cross seen near the start. Title – The End
