This is a collection of four films made by a Beverley filmmaker, possibly Peter Robinson. The first is of a steam fair, the second of a trip to York, the third showing the inside of Beverley Minster and the fourth showing a Remembrance Day commemoration.
The film opens showing a poster for the Transport of Yesteryear Festival, at Beverley Racecourse on Friday to Monday, 9, 10, 11 and 12th July.
The first film begins with a highland band leading a procession of traction engines through Beverley, along Toll Gavel, filmed opposite Burton’s, Boots and Goodfellows. There is also another band, vintage buses and a vintage fire engine and a penny farthing. They all line up at the Racecourse. Another young man is also filming alongside our cameraman. There is a miniature railway and a fairground organ, a carousel and other rides and a candyfloss stall. The brass band entertains the visitors. The fair is filmed from a ride on the Big Wheel. Then there is a circus with dwarf clowns and jugglers. This part of the film ends again showing the advertising poster.
The second film starts showing a postcard of York, and a view over towards the Minster taken from the City Walls near the Railway Station. Other places shown include the Guildhall, the Museum Gardens, Lendal Bridge, Petergate, around the Minster and various views taken from the City Walls, walking around the entire perimeter. Many other places in the city, often taken from unusual vantage points, are filmed, including Barrel Organ Phil in King’s Square, with the film ending where it began.
The third film begins showing the inside of Beverley Minster, including the stained glass windows and many of the carved figures. A girl in a red coat wanders around looking at some of the items on display in the Minster.
There is a break and then a fourth film, titled, Lest we Forget, which begins showing small crosses with poppies, planted near the War Memorial, and some archive film footage from World War One screened in a frame. This is followed by more poppies growing wild. Those attending the Armistice Day Service in the Minster come out, including veterans and soldiers, to form a procession which marches off. This is followed by more archive film footage, this time of people welcoming allied troops in the Second World War marching into a liberated European city.
Then the film goes back to the procession, which has several uniformed groups, arriving at the Saturday Market along with the Mayor, with a small crowd watching from the pavement. Local dignitaries stand on the Bandstand as the procession passes by. They arrive at the cenotaph opposite St Mary’s Church, with the Mayor laying the first wreath. More wreaths are laid and then those congregated disband. The film finishes again showing archive footage from the war and poppies in a field.
