This film shows the working of the 11” and 24” continuous bar mills at Parkgate Iron and Steel works in Rotherham.
A workman dons gauntlets and a helmet and uses cutting and grinding machines on a steel bar. Another workman chisels a piece out of the bar. The film switches to show the steel bars being lifted by a magnetic crane and pushed through a furnace in a large steel works. Once red hot the bar is taken out and passed through a rolling mill, where it gets thinned out and then cut into sections. These are then bundled up and loaded onto a lorry
Intertitle – Blooms are transported to the 24” bar and section mill where the majority are rolled into joists for later fabrication into fit arches and pit props.
Again red hot bars pass through a rolling mill. They are cut into sections of girders, inspected and loaded onto a lorry. Some are bent into an arched shape and others are sealed at the ends before being loaded onto railway wagons.
Intertitle – You will recall that slag is tapped at the blast furnace every 2 hours. The slag is cooled, crushed and made into road making material.
The slag is pulled by a small steam locomotive in two wagons. The wagons have the molten slag poured into steel mould containers, helped out by a workman using a long pole. These are then lifted out by a crane, emptied and the content is broken up into smaller pieces, transported on a conveyer belt and loaded onto a lorry, which is then driven off. The film finishes showing the slag being used in the laying of a road.
