This is a Universal Newsreel covering a visit of Princess Margaret to Rotherham to commemorate Rotherham`s Golden Jubilee as a County Borough on 23 April 1953, and then to Sheffield to open Rowlinson Technical College. One copy of this film has the title, Princess Margaret Tours the North, British Pathe (on the can it states: Presentation to Rotherham Corporation by Whitehall Cinema).
The film begins with Princess Margaret inspecting a Guard of Honour in front of Rotherham Town Hall with the Mayor, Councillor Young, watched by a large crowd of waving onlookers. Princess Margaret inspects a Guard of Honour of nurses of the St John Ambulance before leaving for All Saints Church, Rotherham.
The Princess is met by the vicar and the Bishop of Sheffield, who conducts the service. Princess Margaret leaves by the North Door and walks up the steps. She is presented with a bouquet by a 9 year old nursing cadet, Judith Howard. The Princess walks down the steps to the waiting Royal car, driving through the crowds.
Then the Princess arrives in Sheffield to a large crowd of waving children and adults. Accompanied by the Mayor of Sheffield the Princess walks to the newly built Rowlinson Technical College, in Norton – replacing Carfield School. She is greeted by cheering school students, passing another Guard of Honour, made up of the Boy’s Brigade, Girl Guides and more nurses of the St John Ambulance. The Princess then has a tour of the College, visiting the laboratories, the gymnasium and the domestic science room. She then goes to the Assembly room, full of school students, to officially open the school, unveiling a plaque.
