This is a film made by a member of the Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland, showing the commemorative service for Stephen Hilhouse who was president from 1950-1959 which is also the year that he died, camping at the Chertsey and Walton Club site and in Italy, and the London to Brighton vintage car race.
The film begins showing a hamster in a cage and a fowl in a field. Following this is the commemorative service for Steven Hillage, one time President of the Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland, and a plaque for him. Then we see a family picking flowers from their back garden.
Then to a campsite, with tents, caravans and cars lining the perimeter, with two wooden huts in the middle. Some of the tents are decorated. Campers are seated outside their tents, with a dachshund and children gathered in the middle, who then disperse and reappear in fancy dress. Cows graze among the tents. The family are next seen at their bungalow playing with their dachshund. Back at the campsite, which is large and almost full, some campers visit the brick building housing the toilets.
The next scene shows cars passing along a country road among hills, and then a cruise ship passes by as they sit by the sea. They cross a footbridge across a river before stopping to pitch their tent at a smaller campsite. They continue on their journey, stopping to watch cut grass being made into piles, possibly in Italy. They go into high mountain area and are next sunbathing on the beach in the Mediterranean. Next they do a tour of Venice and continue through the mountains.
The film switches to people canoeing on a river near the works of the marine engineers Whittingham and Mitchel Ltd. at Chertsey. A man in a canoe demonstrates rolling over. There is a short view of an English seaside resort and then back at a campsite where a cadet band is marching. There follows some fun and games and another children’s fancy dress, with some great costumes, dancing with sticks, and lots of camper vans with opening tops.
The final scene shows vintage cars at the London to Brighton car rally, before switching again to show a snow mover clearing a place for ice skating. Then there are shots of many cars parked next to a field on one side and a factory on the other, a farm and a view over to the sea, possibly in Devon, and the beach with tide out. The film moves to a campsite, with another fancy dress competition and fishing on a river next to the Walton Club camping site. There is boating on a river and at the campsite various races, one involving rolling wheels along, a tug-of-war and a three-legged race and the film comes to an end.
