Title – Rotherham Lights up again Christmas 1969
Opening with a jazzy up tempo musical score, workers put up lights in front of All Saints Church. They use a platform on the back of a red council van, and pedestrians and traffic pass by underneath. Across the road is Morace Brook Ltd.
On a dark evening, the Mayor of Rotherham arrives to fanfare. He makes speech before pressing the switch to turn the lights on. There is a panoramic view of the lights, and many are shown close up.
Intertitle – and again Christmas 1970
A group of men fell a large Christmas tree which they haul off. It is next seen being pulled into place in front of All Saints Church in the town centre. Lights are erected above the streets and above Woolworth’s. A green Rotherham Corporation Building Works Dept. van drives past and heads towards and pulls up at the building of the Advertiser. Men take out a large Christmas decoration.
In the evening, the Mayoress takes centre stage at the light switching on ceremony. She is accompanied by the sounds of bugles, and again there is a tour of all the lights.
The film switches to show the sign for Rotherham in its centenary year.
Intertitle – Centenary Illuminations 1971
Title – Commentary by Harvey Kane
A man walks past the Chapel of Our Lady on Rotherham Bridge, and then Christmas trees are shown being erected on a roundabout. Workers hang street lights and decorations in front of the Advertiser building. Two workmen look at a map which shows the plan for the decorations. Effingham Street is in the middle. Decorations are being put up in front of the new Centenary Market. In the evening the Mayor, Stan Crowther, arrives to switch on the lights. These are shown, including an outdoor market with shoppers in the evening.
Title – Then on to 1972.
Again the lights are shown, including the outdoor market with shoppers in the evening.
