The film begins with Professor F E Hopper speaking to the camera explaining that a patient suffering poliomyelitis. The patient is being given oxygen from a Smith Clarke respirator. The respirator is connected by a tube to the patient’s throat, by-passing the mouth, and therefore preventing the patient from being able to speak. Her body is paralysed apart from the big toe on her left foot. An oral vibrator developed by Mr R B Tate is being used to allow her to speak. This is connected to her toe that operates a lever to produce a sound in her mouth. The vibrator is displayed and its components explained. The patient tries to talk to a doctor without the aid of the vibrator, and no sound comes out. Then the instrument is inserted into her mouth on a denture. This sends an electronic signal to a battery operated oscillator unit when the patient speaks, and this modulates the sound to reproduce the speech patterns. She is then able to have a conversation with the doctor. After the conversation the nurse arrives to check that the patient is comfortable.
