This is a film made by Edward Warburton of a family holiday tour of the Shetland Islands. The holiday happens to coincide with the Round Britain Race which features Robert Knox-Johnson.
The film begins showing a map with the islands of Lerwick, Sunburgh and Scalloway, followed by another map of Angus. The family start their journey in Dunkeld, parked in the town centre, outside the Ell Shop. They have look inside and around Dunkeld Cathedral, with a view from the top. They next head up to Balmoral, walking around the grounds. Then they go to Aberdeen, showing goods being loaded onto a ferry ship, St Ninian, in the docks, including boxes of corn flakes. They board the ferry and travel up to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. From here they visit the Italian Chapel, before heading up to Lerwick on the ferry. Here they survey the fishing boats in the harbour. The ship unloads some of its cargo, including livestock. There is a copy of the Shetland Times for 17th July, 1970 with a report of the round Britain race featuring Robert Knox-Johnson. An American yacht, the Trumpeter, is moored here along with several others, including Ocean Spirit. A catamaran, the Snow Goose, comes into to dock. There is also a battle cruiser moored here.
From Lerwick they journey to Jarlshof, where sheep are having their wool plucked by hand, and there are piles of peat. They visit the ruins of a Viking house and other archaeological sites. They return to the harbour and docks at Lerwick, before venturing off again, past Whalsey, up to Mid Yell. Here more goods are unloaded, including crates of milk, a tractor and food boxes loaded onto a lorry. They sail on again to Brough Lodge, where more goods are unloaded onto a small boat. Then it is onto Uyeasound. Here again a boat meets them to pick up sacks of goods. These are joined by some of the passengers with their luggage and they sail to the shore and on to Cullivoe, and again goods are unloaded onto a boat. From there they sail on to Baltasound, where barrels and boxes are unloaded. From then to Muckle Flugga, where they pet ponies in a field. A map shows their destination, where a lighthouse sits on a rock.
