Intertitle – Various family shots that just belong together
The film begins with a view across some fields, with houses in the middle distance. Then a small boy is toddling about in a back garden. This is followed by another small boy a couple of years older riding a tricycle also in the back garden, and a close up of a woman.
Intertitle – Some time ago I decided to make some film of ancient Elland – but did not get very far. The roof tops, the old prison, the river at the bridge, ha’penny bar, the national school after the fire and other similar points of interest now fast disappearing were all I managed.
There is a view over the river and canal across Elland, followed by an old grand bus shelter. Above the door is a plaque of 1921, stating ‘Keepeth the law is wise’. A woman and an elderly man, Willie Lord, sit on some stocks. Willie Lord is then on a pony at the back of the Fleece Inn, Elland. There is another view of a bridge across the river with some mills and an old derelict school, followed by a modern school. Finally there is footage looking over the houses with mills in the distance.
Intertitle – Then came a very immature attempt at a family holiday record film in 16mm colour. Memories of a holiday at Filey 1951.
The family sit on deckchairs on the beach, with two boys making sandcastles. A man rolls up his trousers to paddle into the sea to a rowing boat, and another man carries a woman out to the boat to go on a pleasure ride along the coast. They pass the HMS Destroyer St. James (D65). Back on the beach they paddle in the sea and relax. Some are on small paddle boats.
Intertitle – Ruth
There is a brief shot of a small girl and a man giving a woman a piggy back. Back home the girl is on an up-and -down peddle horse, with her brother on his tricycle. They kiss each other, with a man and woman standing on the doorstep.
Intertitle – This was followed the same year by a similar film – titled too!!!
Intertitle – For the September “break” we went to Skipsea.
Two boys take it in turns to go on a tricycle outside a holiday chalet, outside of which are two women, mother and daughter in identical dresses, and two men.
Intertitle – The crow at “The Board” does its tricks.
A crow pulls matches out of a matchbox with its beak.
Intertitle – Siamese cats at Sleights.
Two Siamese cats eat meat off a plate.
Intertitle – The following Whitsuntide I took my camera further afield – still on family record – and even managed titles as well!!
Intertitle – Whit: 1952. A week end at Leominster to see George, Barbara, Michael and Jennifer.
A family group of adults and children are out on a lawn.
Intertitle – Then I had a lucky break – I made a short film of Conway Castle and this (probably due to the lack of entries) won the Cine Club short film competition. This gave me great heart and started the series of “memories” films.
Intertitle – Conway Castle
The Castle is seen from afar and then closer up. They do a tour of the Castle, showing it from many aspects, and showing the surrounding view.
Intertitle – This bit of Caernarvon castle, taken at the same time, was excluded from the victorious short. You see why.
There is film of Caernarvon Castle.
Intertitle – But I had my failures too!
About this time we acquired a 12” television set and game for anything I blazed 50ft of black and white at the “goggle” box. I leave you to judge with what results. The funeral of King George VI is of historic interest though I count this a complete failure.
There is the film of the television transmission of the funeral [somewhat dark and flickering].
Intertitle – Shots at Waverley sports 1953
(B&W) A brief close up of a boy is followed by children in a sprint race, an egg and spoon race and other races, at Waverley primary/junior school sports day, the interspersed with more close ups of small children.
Intertitle – A little indoor domestic scene.
(Col). There is film of the snow on the outside of the house, while indoors a boy in pyjamas brushes his teeth and says his prayers before being tucked into bed by his mother.
Title – The End.
